Sectionalism vs. Nationalism • Two economies become entrenched… • Southern – based on agriculture (cotton), spurred on by cotton gin – production! • Northern – based on manufacturing, mechanized machinery becomes prominent (Industrial Revolution) • Both work hand-in-hand…don’t get one without the other, even though both regions were proud of their respective systems/ “way of life”…

Sectionalism vs. Nationalism • Nationalism in action…. • Monroe Doctrine – America “flexing it’s muscle” with regards to foreign powers… • President Monroe warns outside powers to not interfere with affairs in the Western Hemisphere… • Do not try to create new colonies or overthrow governments; U.S. would see this as a direct threat… • Adams-Onis Treaty – Spain cedes Florida to U.S., gives up claims to Oregon Territory…

Sectionalism vs. Nationalism • Missouri Compromise – problem with statehood for MO…issue of slavery! • 11 free and 11 slave states….MO upsets the balance in Congress either way! • Temporarily resolved… • Maine admitted as a free state • Missouri admitted as a slave state • Rest of LA Purchase divided at 36 30’ north latitude….everything south was slave, everything north was free…
