  2. Juniors 10/1/14 • Warm-up: Vocabulary (read OR novel when done or you can start on task #2) (take out speech packet so I can check it) 2. Chromebooks—Prompt—”In your opinion, was Patrick Henry’s emotional or logical (reason) argument stronger? Provide evidence directly from the text to support your answer.” HW: IRA #1 DUE: THIS THURSDAY 10/2 HW: OR and find examples of your chosen literary device

Provide evidence directly from the text to support your answer.” • MLA heading for your name (see your practice document to remind yourself of how to do that) • 12 point, New Times Roman, double spaced • Write your thesis first (and label it thesis) (see Puritan/Rationalist prompt we started a couple of weeks ago to remind yourself how to set up thesis and the paragraph you need to write) • You can say on page 1Henry states, “I like pizza.” or you can write the quote first and cite the page in parentheses (1) • DO NOT submit this as a separate document…add it to your folder

Freshmen 10/1/14 • Warm-up:Read OR novel or study for vocabulary • Finish and share examples of indirect characterization from Up • Add character types from “Marigolds” to list • Read poems • Formative Assessment for Characterization Chapter II: pages 140 and 141 (short answer summative response on Friday) HW: IRA #1 DUE: THIS THURSDAY 10/2 HW: OR (and identify examples of literary devices)

  5. Freshmen (Finishing “Marigolds”) By the end of this chapter you will be able to… 1. Identify…direct and indirect characterization, the four ways authors can use speech to reveal character, and other methods authors use to create characters 2. Compare and contrast the way the authors of two different stories used methods of characterization and judge which one was better. 3. Explain how the story would have been different if another form of character development was substituted in a particular story (i.e. switching first person narration for an omniscient narrator) **Note: #1 will be shown in your notes and through formative assessments throughout the chapter; #2 will be done with partners (Venn Diagram or related task); #3 will be your short, constructed response for this unit.

  6. “Direct and Indirect Characterization Examples” Movie “Up”: write down at least five examples of indirect characterization from the film for either the boy or girl; try to focus on actions or what a character might not have said (remember silence from “Thank You, Ma’m)
