  1. What is physical change in matter? Changes In Matter, Especially Water • Physical properties such as size, weight, color, and position can change. Materials can also change state. • Matter goes through a PHYSICAL CHANGE when it changes the way it looks WITHOUT becoming a new kind of matter Cutting fruit intopieces causesa physical change. The pieces are made of the same kind of matter asthe whole fruit.

  2. Some ways to cause physical change: • There are LOTS of ways to change how matter looks • One special types of PHYSICAL CHANGE is a change in the state of matter – think about water changing from solid (ice – 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower) to liquid (a glass of water you can drink – room temperature, about 72 degrees Fahrenheit) to gas (water vapor from boiling water – 212 degrees Fahrenheit)

  3. QUICK TIP! • NO MATTER HOW MANY PHYSICAL CHANGES YOU MAKE, THE AMOUNT AND KIND OF MATTER REMAIN THE SAME! • Let’s test this out with some water!

  4. What are some ways to combine matter? • MIXTURES: When you put a bunch (two or more) of different pieces of matter together. • A good way to think of a mixture is a salad. Everything is mixed together but all of it keeps its own identity. • Mixtures can be separated: take the salad apart, boil the water away from a saltwater to separate the salt and the water.

  5. What are some ways to combine matter? • SOLUTIONS: When one or more substances dissolve in another. It is a kind of mixture but you might not be able to see the particles in a solution AND you can separate the parts of a solution. A solution combines two substances which keep their identities even though it seems like something new is made. For example, lemonade combines water, lemon juice, and sugar. They do not change the type of matter they are – they just get MIXED together.

  6. What are chemical changes in matter? • Some changes in matter can produce new kinds of matter. We use these changes all the time! • A chemical change is one in which one kind of matter changes into a different kind of matter. • In a chemical changes, you can’t separate the parts that are combined and changed.

  7. Using chemical change • Burning wood • Gas burning in your parent’s car • Pizza • Fireworks • Rusting metal • Washing dishes • Cooking eggs

  8. When we measure changes, especially in water, we need to know how to measure temperature

  9. Forms water can have • Solid - ICE • Liquid – WHAT YOU DRINK • Gas – WATER VAPOR, FOG

  10. What causes these changes? • Temperature! • Water FREEZES at 32 degrees Fahrenheit • Between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 211 degrees Fahrenheit, water is a liquid • At 212 degrees Fahrenheit, water turns into a gas through a process called EVAPORATION • Water turns back into a liquid through condensation (the cooling of water)

  11. The WATER CYCLE PRECIPITATION – water that falls to earth (rain, snow, sleet, or hail) Some precipitation seeps into the ground and becomes groundwater, other precipitation falls into bodies of water.

  12. Ways to clean water • Water may contain germs, dirt, salt, or other pollutants that make it taste or smell bad OR make it bad to drink. • We can FILTER water to clean it of impurities. • We can BOIL water to kill off bad bacteria. • We can use WATER TABLETS to clean water as well.
