  1. Main Idea Mr. Scanlon’s 7th Grade Class

  2. Main Idea The main idea of a passage (piece of writing) is what it’s mostly about.

  3. Relevant - connected with the subject being discussed.

  4. Main Idea There are clues in the passage to let you identify the main idea: 1. The main idea is usually stated in the topic sentence. This is often (but not always) the first sentence.

  5. My favorite place to visit is New York City. One thing I like about it is the variety of restaurants. Another thing I like is the great number of museums, from modern art to culture and history. Finally, there is the theatre district on Broadway, with some of the greatest live entertainment in the world. This is why New York City is my favorite place to visit. What’s the main idea?

Finally, there is the theatre district on Broadway, with some of the greatest live entertainment in the world. This is why New York City is my favorite place to visit.

  7. As soon as I climb up out of the subway, I know that I’m standing in the capital of the world. I can have all-you-can-eat sushi at IchiUmi, steaks at Sardi’s, or hop a cab to ChurriscariaPlataforma for the finest Brazilian food in America. A quick walk around the block, and I’m on Broadway, where I’ve seen Hugh Jackman, Melina Kanakaredes, and Pee-Wee Herman on stage. Minutes later, I can be inside an Egyptian temple, look at 16th century German armor, or stand in front of a painting that was touched by the hand of Vincent Van Gogh at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The only place in the world that I can do all these things in a single afternoon is New York City, my very favorite place to visit. What’s the main idea?

  9. Main Idea There are clues in the passage to let you identify the main idea: 2. All of the relevant details support the main idea.

  10. My favorite place to visit is New York City. One thing I like about it is the variety of restaurants.Another thing I like is the great number of museums, from modern art to culture and history. Finally, there is the theatre district on Broadway, with some of the greatest live entertainment in the world. This is why New York City is my favorite place to visit. What statement do ALL of these sentences support?

  11. Supporting Ideas • The passage mentions restaurants, but it’s not mostly about restaurants. • The passage mentions museums, but it’s not mostly about museums. • The passage mentions Broadway, but it’s not mostly about Broadway. • All of these relevant details are helping to support the mainidea, which is that New York City is my favorite place to visit.

  12. What if I get confused? Scanlon’s Shortcut: Since all of the sentences in a passage should support the main idea, try a simple test: • If you thought the main idea was that New York has great restaurants, check to see if the other sentences support this idea. • Does “Another thing I like is the great number of museums, from modern art to culture and history” support this main idea? • Does “Finally, there is the theatre district on Broadway, with some of the greatest live entertainment in the world” support this main idea? • No. So this can’t really be the main idea of the passage.

  13. The main idea of a paragraph is what all the sentences are about. Read the paragraph and ask, “What’s your point?” That will help you zero in on the main idea. • Read each paragraph carefully. Choose the best answer to the questions that follow. Source: http://www.rhlschool.com/read6n4.htm
