    2. Hydrochloric Acid Pickling In hydrochloric acid pickling, the acid reacts with the scale on the steel as follows: Fe2O3 + Fe + 6HCl = 3FeCl2 + 3H2O Fe3O4 + Fe + 8HCl = 4FeCl2 + 4H2O FeO + 2HCl = H2O + FeCl2 The iron stays in solution in the hydrochloric acid as ferrous ion (Fe2+)
