  1. OF HIP-HOP Hip-hop is now commonly known as rap is a genre that contains rhythmic music with a beat that usually stays within the same tempo and beat. Hip-Hop is generally classed as a rhyming speech that is chanted. It has developed into its own group is shown with these artistic elements: Mcing, Djing, rapping, scratching, breaking, dancing, beat boxing and graffiti writing. These are all of the possible expressions that Hip-Hop give out. Hip-Hop as music and a type of culture formed during the 1970’s when block parties became popular in New York, this mainly came from the African American and Latino youths from the Bronx. At these parties they had DJ’s who played mainly funk and soul music. As this was a positive thing for a new genre of music DJ’s such as DJ Kool Herc began to use two turn tables to extend the breaks. Hip-Hop has made a great impact on the world of music as it has brought many techniques into the music world such as: scratching, beat mixing/matching, beat juggling and also creating a base that can be rapped over all influenced by Jamaican Dub Music. Even though Hip-Hop has influenced the world in many ways , it has also caused a lot of problems. During the 1990’s between artists and fans of the East coast and West coast Hip-Hop scenes. The East coast rapper The Notorious B.I.G. and his record label Bad Boy records a.k.a Bad Boy Entertainment and West coast rapper Tupac and his record label Death Row Records , both were murdered during these times.

  6. These sell lines at the top are very clever as it allows the cover to have move space. It also allows a quick and easy way for potential buyers to see what artists will be featured in the magazine. HIP-HOP EDITION The title ‘VIBE’ is bold and is a striking colour and so stands out on the page. The ‘V’ is also done in an unusual way which adds uniqueness to the cover. These bold white headlines almost contradict the facial expression of the artist as it’s a smooth font and isn’t aggressive. The colour palate used is very limited as the colour of title matches the sell lines and the use of the colour red also helps us understand that its an aggressive image and maybe even and aggressive story of the artist life. The use of white is a nice touch as it’s a calming colour and works very well with the use of the colours black and red. This image of another magazine , is also a good use of advertising as it gives the readers an incite to what's coming next. The choice of this mid shot pose is very aggressive as his facial expression looks as though he’s seeing something that he doesn’t like. The use of the background really helps support the image itself as it’s a bathroom setting and the artist is also wet. Also the fact that his body has been oiled for a sexual look and help depict the light on his body, this attracts men and women as men want to look like this and women want to look at this. I feel that this is so that they can get women involved into hip-hop music as it’s a good image of his body. This barcode is quite different from other magazines as it advertises the magazine website. This is a very good thing for music magazines to do as it allows the reader to gain more information on various artists. Its kind of like an introduction to what the magazine offers.

  7. The colour scheme used is of a basic palate as its black and white and is used very boldly as they are statement colours. This helps to tell the reader that the artist is main part of the cover. Also the use of pink helps pick out the colour of her lipstick. HIP-HOP EDITION The Masthead is bold as its black it stands out. It’s a title that has a heading before it as if it’s a quoted title. Also the use of the ‘KING’ down the left hand third so that when the magazines are laid out in a shop you would be able to see the name of the magazine ‘s name. The use of these sell lines allow the reader to see who's going to be in the magazine . The list of artists are women which suggests that this magazine is strictly based ion women hip-hop artists. The heading of ‘NICKI MINAJ’ is effective as it s used two statement colours. The advantage of using a background under the artists name helps to add definition the how important the artist is and lets artists name stand out. This image is very suggestive and also seductive as her facial expression is staring directly at the you giving the reader and the artist immediate eye contact. Her hair is positioned around her chest which enhances the fact that she has big chest on , it’s the first thing that you notice about the image. The use of the bra being the same colour as her skin allows the image to flow. The way that she is holding onto the silk shirt is yet seductive but aggressive. The use of the longshot carries on the glow of light shown on her skin as if to give her the golden skin look. This is a barcode that has the price printed on it. The use of the caption underneath is almost humorous as it connects to the price of the magazine.

  8. The facial expression of the artist is very seductive and seems to be a very natural pose, the use of the lighting on her face creates a nice soft mood and also produces even shadows. The way that her hand has been deliberately placed on her chest holds two possible connotations. She's either holding her hand to her heart in lust or desire of something or someone. Or she is trying to link it to her seductive facial expression. The use of the polar neck leotard has been used very cleverly as she is covered up and gives her a sense of innocence. But then as you look down the image her leg has been deliberately put in front of the luxurious fur jacket. HIP-HOP EDITION I would expect the intended audience to be 13-30+ year olds as Hip-Hop music is the most common genre amongst young people. The colour fonts used are very basic as there is a main use of White and the font is also very small. Also there is a use of primary colours such as the green, blue, yellow etc. which have been associated within each section of the magazine. Within these sections you are told what is in the section and what age it’s on. The language and style of writing is very different from a normal magazine. For example the use of the word ‘departments’ gives the impression that Hip-Hop is highly linked to fashion as the are department stores for clothing. Also with the way that the contents writing has been laid out it gives you a little insight sentence as to what's going to be talked about. The use of bold and Capitals make the sub-headings stand out. There are a few promotional features such as the website of the magazine at the top and the use of a semi-logo to get the readers attention so that they become aware od the website. However the logo isn't very dominant. Also at the bottom of the Contents page it mentions the Artists name, who the photographer was and also what she’s wearing. It also says the date the magazine was put out.

  9. The fonts and colours used are also very basic like the other contents page, the typography used is very sophshisticated. The colour palate is Plain white ad the sub-headings of each section is written in bold black The Heading for the font have been done in bold black as the ‘CONTENTS’ is very big and bold. Whereas the headings are very different and almost like calligraphy. HIP-HOP EDITION The magazines logo on the behind the artists image is very dominant as it been deliberately placed in the background. It helps to remind the reader what the magazines logo looks like and can also been seen as a commercial/promotional idea. The audience that would read this kind of magazine would be 12- 30= year olds as it appeals to and younger and older audience Again there are promotional features used such as who the artist in the image is, who the photographer was and it includes the date. The Facial expression of the artist is very aggressive and looks as though he is analysing the reader. His eyes look like they’re full of hate which links the colour of red used for the paper heart that a woman is holding up to his chest. Suggesting that his heart has been ripped out almost or has been ripped out. This image is very clever and unique as the woman who’s behind him has been hidden very well. Also the use of the aggressiveness scrunching of her hand suggests that she is ripped it out. The image is black and white which brings across the emotion within the photo. This contents page has two sections called ‘features’ and ‘fashion’. This tells me that the Hip-Hop audience is influenced by the way that hip-hop artists dress and also that there will be many more artist within the magazine other than the one used for the front cover and contents page.

  10. The black and white effect uses on the smaller images follows the style of music well. Its also a very unique way to layout a double page spread As this magazine seems very tame the target audience could start from 11 and go up to 30+ The text is in well structured columns and looks very professional and neat. The font is very limited and is a basic grey colour. The blue has been used very nicely to highlight the artists name. Also the use of the blue font picks out the blue of the artists chain. Which also links to the blue typography in the top left hand corner. The large image used is very striking and a bold as she is wearing a bright orange dress. The way that she is dressed is very usual for a Hip-Hop magazine as her body is mainly covered up rather than stereotypically on show. However she has quite a lot of her legs being revealed and they also look as though they have been lengthened Her pose and position of her eyes gives direct eye contact to the readers. Her facial expression is very neutral and innocent , this innocence is also carried through the image as her hands are positioned behind her back.

  11. The use of the title’s font matches well with the Hip-Hop genre as its graffiti like and graffiti is associated with Hip-hop. The use of the splashes of red within the font helps pick of the important bits of the statement. ‘SWAG’ in Hip-Hop terms means that you have nice clothing. Suggesting that to be in the Hip-Hop industry as a male you have to have a good sense of style. There is a little bit of promotion for the magazine company here advertising the website,. I love the use of this image as it really highlights the Hip-Hop life of a Hip-Hop male artist. The image has used the same bold colour of red. This stand out as there is a kiss mark on his neck and also a red love heart. Also the use of the pose enhances his tattoo’s also suggesting that tattoo’s are a part of the male Hip-Hop lifestyle. The font sixe used here is fairly small, however as its laid out in columns allows the double-page spread to look highly professional.

  12. Who is the target audience? How old are they? Where do they live? Are they mixed or single sex? What are their interests? The target audience would be around the ages of 13 – 21 and will possibly be live in London as we don’t have loads of top Hip-Hop magazines. The magazine will be for mixed sex as in the Hip-Hop industry there is both female and male artists and this would only make sense that we follow the normal tradition of hip-hop magazines. There interests would be music from this genre as it is strictly based on one type of music. They would also have to be interested in hip-hop artists such as: Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne etc. What is the name of your magazine? Why? Connotations? What will your masthead look like? Do you have any ideas for fonts? (this should be accompanied by sketches) Who will be your front cover model and why? What sort of shot will it be? Inside / outside? Low / high angle? What mise en scene will be required? Location? Clothing? Make Up? Lighting? Use of colour? What would be your sell lines? How will you entice your target audience? What items and feature articles would you need on your contents page?
