Home Rule Classic • The Faroes are a self-governing nation within the Danish Realm • “Faroese” is a Danish citizen living in the Faroes • List A: issues, which the Faroese Government may assume responsibility for, and • Liste B: issues, where responsibility may be assumed after negotiations with DK authorities • Issues not mentioned are as a main rule resting with the Danish authorities • Faroese self-government is at any time subjected to the limitations that follow from treaties and other international obligations

Home Rule Updated • The Home Rule arrangement was updated in 2005 by the “Act on the Assumption of Matters and Fields of Responsibility” • In principle all Matters and Fields of Responsibilities may be assumed by Faroese Authorities at a time they determine. • The 2005 update also includes an “Act on the Concluding of Agreements under International Law by the Government of the Faroes”

External relations • The Faroes are not part of EU • Included in Denmark’s membership of NATO • Bilateral fisheries agreements with EU, Russia, Norway, Iceland and Greenland • Active participant in regional organisations concerning management of fisheries in the North Atlantic (NEAFC, NAFO, NASCO) • Associated member of IMO, FAO and UNESCO • Trade and Veterinary Agreements with EU • Bilateral trade agreements with a number of countries – the most extensive with Iceland • Nordic co-operation • Arctic Council
