  1. Micron Foundation Partnering to improve mathematics education in Idaho

  2. Micron Foundation Mission Statement: to develop effective programs that promote math, science, and engineering education; and to participate in activities that address the priorities and concerns of the communities where Micron employees live and work. Outreach, grants, innovation, and collaboration are key elements in reaching our goals.

  3. Micron Foundation • K-12 grants • K-12 outreach program • Community grants • Employee volunteerism • University Relations • Program grants • Research grants • Scholarships

  4. Importance of Math to Business • Imperative to have access to top quality educational opportunities at K-12 schools and at the University level. • Businesses need: • Quality workforce at all levels of employment • Math is a required skill for entry level positions • Graduates ready for hire • Micron has spent up to $1 million annually for work readiness training • Continuing education opportunities for workforce advancement • Accessible, affordable, and relevant

  5. Association with Math Initiative • Math Science Partnership grant • Boise State University • Lee Pesky Learning Center • Covered research side of the pilot • Developing Mathematical Thinking Grants • Spalding Elementary • Desert Sage Elementary • Math Initiative • Public awareness campaign

  6. Outreach efforts • During the 2007-2008 Academic Year… • 714 Micron Members participated in • 672 events in • 202 different schools, reaching • 18,427 students • 1,368 teachers and • 252 counselors

  7. Engineering the Future Math, Physical Science, Physics, Chemistry. Technology, Counseling, Language Arts

  8. Math in the Workplace - Algebra • BOISE POLICE DEPARTMENT • Law Enforcement Police Officer • Job Description: Traffic investigation

  9. Problem: • A car travels 1.467 feet per second for every 1 mph. • The formula for speed (in miles per hour) is S =  30fd. • Feet per second (fps) = miles per hour (mph) x 1.467 • Total Stopping Distance = (reaction time) x (fps) + skid length • d=Distance traveled • Time = d / vQuestions: • 1. Assuming a reaction time of .75 seconds, how fast was car A traveling at the beginning of its skid? The coefficient of friction (f) on the road is .80. The coefficient of friction is given for different circumstances, such as dry pavement, snow floor, or black ice. 2. What was the total stopping distance of car A? 3. How long did it take car B to turn if driver A reacted immediately when car B began its turn?

  10. Math Meets

  11. Math Fun d’ Mentals adds up to great fun!

  12. “This is a great opportunity for Gabi to have some fun with math as opposed to homework time. Anytime you get that chance it can only help with her learning. Creating this opportunity for parents to interact with their children is a wonderful thing for us as family.”

  13. A Math Fun d’Mentals kit contains everything needed (other than the volunteers and M&M’s®) for a school’s volunteers or parent group to host a family math event!

  14. The Math Fun d’ Mentals kit provides all the tools to host a family math Event: • “How to” notebook • Timelines for required tasks • Helpful hints

  15. Manipulatives and materials needed for the activities

  16. Activity handouts—in English and Spanish!
