  3. Current Issues • GCSE Predictions 2010 • GCSE Results Final 2009 • OFSTED Update • School Improvement Reorganisation • Emerging Government policies • Leadership in Essex schools • SIPs, LASEPs, Results 2010 • Meeting dates 2010 / 2011

GCSE Predictions by Area • Based on the 14, 650 children in mainstream schools, this suggests a county – wide average of 57% • However, there are something like 500 Y11 pupils in education other than at mainstream school • Assuming none of these pupils gains 5+ A* - C with English and Maths, the average drops to 55% • This would be a rise of 5% on 2009 • DfE Target for Essex is 56.2%

School Improvement Reorganisation : June moves • Paul Hughes and Christine Mayle will leave the service in the Autumn • Rosemary Prince will oversee NE and MID schools with Di Shepherd taking on South schools in addition to West • Behaviour and Attendance colleagues moved over to school improvement in April • From September they will be joined by the 8 ICT Consultants, the EMTAS team, Governor Intervention Services and Healthy Schools / Citizenship teams. • The Curriculum Access division will be disbanded and personnel redistributed as above.

Emerging Government Policy • BECTA and QCDA axed • Abolition of GTC? • Outstanding schools to become Academies from September 2010; over 1100 Secondary, Primary and special have put themselves forward for consideration to become academies • No decision yet on BSF but Partnership for Schools likely to be redirected to help with capital projects for those wishing to become academies or find premises to aid ‘free’ schools

Leadership Issues • Growth in number of Executive Headteachers • Increase in Diversity - Federations, Trusts and Academies • New Academies • Induction of new Headteachers – which programmes, led by whom? • The Essex dimension? (9 of the 15 headships listed above have gone to Essex DHTs) • Succession planning – how are we preparing Essex senior leaders to take on HT role?

SIPs, LASEPs, Results • Currently reviewing SIP allocations for 2010/11 • All SIPs fully aware of Specialist School redesignation requirements • Please return SIP evaluation forms by July 1st • LASEPs – thanks for taking time to meet with Secondary Improvement colleagues. It does provide very useful complementary information • Pro forma sent from John Perry in the data team asking for named contact for results • Second pro forma to go out before end of June which details how to communicate provisional results
