The workshop Overall aim: To discuss and explore ways to improve our safeguarding responsibilities for children and young people. • Engage delegates to look at how best to work together in RBWM to identify and provide support for children and young people affected by domestic abuse • Increase depth of understanding and update on key areas surrounding safeguarding and domestic abuse

  3. Working rules • Confidentiality • Listening and being heard • Consider your responses • Appropriate, non oppressive language • Time out • Identifying support • Time keeping • Mobile phones

  4. Domestic abuse is… ‘any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults, aged 18 and over, who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender and sexuality.’ (Family members are defined as mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister and grandparents, whether directly related, in-laws or step-family.) Thames Valley Police

  6. Impact of DA on children • Every Child Matters: • Be Healthy • Stay Safe • Enjoy & Achieve • Make a Positive Contribution • Achieve Economic Wellbeing

  7. Questions for discussion • Discuss and explore current ways of identifying and supporting children at risk of domestic abuse. What are the strengths/gaps? • Once identified, what kind of help do families, children and young people actually receive from local agencies? Are there barriers to providing support and if so, how can we promote better practice? (think about referral routes, thresholds, Berkshire CP procedures etc) • Discuss what preventative interventions we can implement to help prevent children and young people developing into older adults who may start to commit criminal offences or being violent themselves (where they have witnessed domestic abuse growing up) • Examine methods of empowering young people to engage with a range of services to identify and report domestic abuse
