  2. MSW PHASE II ORIENTATION • Practicum Purpose • Documents/Requirements • Roles and Responsibilities • Placement Concerns • Placement Policies • Accommodations • Technical Support

  3. PURPOSE OF PRACTICUM • The purpose of your placement is to further advance your critical and professional judgement skills and systematic approaches to inquiry around social issues. You will also be exploring the ethical responsibilities of social workers. • The placement helps you further make those connections between the theory you’ve learned in class and your own personal practice.

  4. We encourage you to practice reflectively and reflexively: Reflective Practice - capacity to understand how social relations and individuals co-produce each other and that we must engage with people across differences. Reflexive practice - understanding that social work practice is relational, involving the whole self, including values, and feelings

  5. REGISTRATION • Register: Advanced Practicum Course 5350.6 (W Term) • MUST register in the Fall although placement starts in the Winter term • MUST complete 5150 (Critical Perspectives) 5250 (Graduate Research Seminar) in the Fall term • 5450 (Practice Research Seminar) is to be taken concurrently with the practicum as your PRS Director guides you through the placement

PLACEMENT INFO • MUST complete 450 hours of placement “on site”, you cannot do less than this or more than 450 hours as you will not be covered by our insurance if you do more than 450 hours • Can start from Jan. 5th 2011 onwards, not before this date • Hours: • FULL 7 hour days at the agency • Lunch hour not counted • Sick time and statutory holidays not counted • If you need time off, speak to your field instructor well in advance beforehand, you will have to work those hours back. • If you are away from placement for one week or more, please let your PRS director know about this.

THE LEARNING CONTRACT • Completed in first 3 weeks • Defines the structure and goals of placement • Joint effort between student and field instructor • Living document – goals can change over the course of the placement. • Use to assess learning (the learning contract is the basis of your mid-point and final) • Shows you are responsible for your learning • Submitted to PRS Director (all evaluations submitted on-line, this is outlined later on in the presentation).

  8. MID TERM EVALUATION • Completed midway through placement (225 hours) • Evaluated on your abilities and competence in social work at a graduate level (conceptual, interpersonal and technical skills, self awareness skills). • Joint Effort between student and field instructor • Submitted to PRS Director • CHECK POINT – look at what you’ve done so far and what you want to focus on for the remainder of the placement. • Revise Learning contract (if needed), this learning contract will be the basis for the final evaluation.

FINAL EVALUATION • Joint Process between the student and field instructor • Submit to PRS Director • Credit process: • Submit the final evaluation, log of hours and student evaluation of placement • PRS Director then informs the Field Office you have passed and the credit can be granted. • No Surprises - supervision throughout placement is key

  13. STUDENT ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES • You are a student, not a volunteer or employee • Take responsibility for your learning, take initiative to get reading materials. You are responsible for following the agencies policies and the professional code of ethics. You are responsible for keeping information confidential. • Your Learning Contract and regular supervision helps define this role

  14. PHILOSOPHY OF PLACEMENT You are responsible for becoming familiar with the agency’s • Mission Statement and • Polices and Procedures

SOCIAL WORK CODE OF ETHICS • Non-social work supervisor: • The Field Instructor is still required to follow the social work code of ethics even if the field instructor doesn’t come from social work (we send them the code of ethics so they are aware). • Check in with your PRS Director to connect theory with practice and if there are other social workers at your agency, access them for support with this as well • Confidentiality and privacy: Important to practice – try to keep information anonymous when talking and writing about clients and respect the client’s right to privacy when this is possible

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS • Check in with your field instructor about things you need to get before your placement begins such as: • Health Documentation: • 10 year booster shot (MMR and DTP) • Varicella (Chicken Pox) immunizations • Hep B immunizations • 2-step TB test • Mask Fit Test • Flu shot • Vulnerable Sector Screening – done in the region you live in • Please fill out the Student Sign Off Sheet (in the confirmation package) and submit it to the Field Office.

  17. USE OF CAR ON PLACEMENT Students do not receive any compensation from York when using their own vehicles for mileage or otherwise. We advise you not to transport clients in your own cars unless directly required to by the placement site. If you are required to do so please ensure you obtain the necessary car insurance to cover such activities.

  18. PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS Ministry of Education Work Education Training Agreement Form Please fill this out and give to the Field Office ASAP as you don’t have coverage until you submit it to us.

  19. Write your site address here Sec. B. (1) - Fill in 2011 in both boxes. (2) Put the time you will start and end your placement day (ex. 9 am to 5 pm). (3) If you may come into placement on a Monday or Tuesday, you can put the information as in the example above, otherwise please put your placement days there.

  20. Sec. C. (2) - Fill in 2011 in each box Sec. D. – Do not fill in, it does not apply to you Sec. E. – You sign as the training participant, please get someone from the agency to sign under the work placement employer section, it is generally not your field instructor but someone in HR, the Executive Director… who signs these type of forms.

  21. If you have an accident at your placement, please inform your PRS Director as soon as you can

FIELD INSTRUCTORROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES • Guide/Mentor • Encourages freedom and openness to critically look at their work and teach and learn experientially. • Orients you to the agency • Helps with giving assignments, giving guidance on these assignments, helps with developing the learning contract. • Helps you to work with other staff at agency (esp. those with BSWs and MSWs) • Recognize they have power in this relationship and uses it for your advantage • Honors student status – they recognize you are not a volunteer or employee and honor your learning goals. • Supervision time – gives scheduled weekly supervision time (1 hour per week usually). • Helps ensure evaluations completed in timely manner

PRS DIRECTOR ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES The Student’s and Field Instructor’s link to the School of Social Work: • PRS class - integrate theory and practice • Any research you do at the placement can’t be used for your PRP and you can’t work on your PRP when you are in placement • Trouble shooter – if you have questions or concerns, ask the PRS Director • Submits Evaluations to Field Office • No site visit – but if needed, please request one from the PRS Director

  24. PLACEMENT CONCERNS If you have concerns about your placement, please speak to your PRS Director. You cannot leave your placement without going through this process, otherwise this constitutes failure of placement.

Online Database – My Profile Once you login you will be directed to your student profile where you can see your contact information, academic information, program, emergency contact information and employment information. If the information is incorrect, please change it through the Registrar’s Website

Learning Contract -- Student inputs information Field Instructor and Faculty Advisor/PRS -- Review Student Submits to Field Instructor On-Line Database – Learning Contract Process Step one – Students initiate the process 1. Talk to your field instructor and agree to what your learning contract. 2. Student logs on database (http://www.yorku.ca/laps/sowk), go to Learning Contract **Firefox performs better than Internet Explorer 3. Input information on Learning Contract (admin, goals, plans for goal) ** save data every 10 minutes, data can’t be saved after 15 minutes though it’s on the screen 4. ‘Submit’ (button at bottom) the Learning Contract to Field Instructor & Faculty Advisor/PRS Director 5. Student needs to print a copy of Learning Contract, signed by Field Instructor and submit the hard copy to Faculty Advisor/PRS Director Step two -- Field Instructor -- Field Instructor logs on database  My Student  Review Step three – Faculty Advisor/PRS Director -- Faulty Advisor/PRS Director logs on database  My Student  Review

On-Line Database - Learning Contract Once you are completely done, click on “Submit” You can print the contract by clicking on “Print Form” If you want to save your information and come back to it, click on “Save”. Your information will be saved but won’t be submitted until you click on submit

On-Line Database - Mid-Point Progress Review You will be directed to your Mid-Point Progress Review Page Click on this box if you and your field instructor have agreed to change the learning goals and/or plans to achieve them. This is the only way you can edit your goals. You can change goals after you have submitted the learning contract, up until you have submitted the mid-point
