  3. SUICIDE B. Suicidal Inmate - inmate who threatens to harm, attempts to harm, or exhibits behavior indicating potential for harming himself/herself may be considered potentially suicidal.

  4. SUICIDE C. Theories of Suicide 1. Suicide viewed as resolution to given situation a. See no other way out of the situation b. No other alternatives

  5. SUICIDE 2. Crisis intervention can help to bring alternatives into awareness 3. Suicide may be seen as an act of assertion, a declaration of independence a. Feel that he is at least competent enough to take his/her own life

  17. SUICIDE H. Preventive Methods Used to Reduce the Potential for Suicide Attempts 1. Observe & get to know the inmates you are responsible for 2. Be alert for changes in behavior & communicative signals

  18. SUICIDE 3. Notify medical department if inmate attempts to injure him/herself 4. Follow suicide prevention plan for inmates 5. Communicate with the inmate’s security/treatment staff
