  4. Rigorous Academic Standards • New ‘Common Core’ state standards • Rigorous graduation requirements • Next generation of assessments

  5. Effective Teaching • Quality of teacher and effectiveness of principal are critical • Educators need resources to update their skills and knowledge, including: • High-quality professional development • Useful evaluations • Support early in years • Opportunities for leadership, advancement

  6. Systems to Support All Students • We can close the achievement gap and improve outcomes for at-risk students • A key is additional, high-quality instruction time, such as: • Summer school • Before/after school programs • Targeted, in-school instruction

  7. Here’s How We’ll Get There • Strong Leadership and Effective Governance • Stable and Adequate Funding • Parents and Communities as Partners

  8. Strong Leadership, Governance • A proven education leader as state superintendent of public instruction • An aligned state education governance structure, from pre-school through grad school • A state accountability system that brings focus and clarity to school performance

  9. Stable and Adequate Funding • Stable and adequate funding, sufficient for schools to: • Provide high-quality education for students to meet high standards • Offer additional instruction for students who need it • Ensure a full school year • In turn, schools must achieve return on investment

  10. Parents, Communities as Partners • Educating the next generation is everyone’s responsibility: • Parents • Teachers • Students • Superintendents and Principals • School classified employees • Governor and Legislature • Community members

Where We Go From Here • Higher standards adopted by State Board • P-20 ‘Oregon Education Investment Team’ established by Governor • Governor, legislature considering change in state superintendent selection process • Legislature considering bills to support effective teaching: performance evaluation, mentoring • Governor, legislature debating declining education budget
