  2. About David Chandler • David Chandler makes violins in Western North Carolina using traditional methods and materials. He began playing violin at the age of 10 studying under Mr. Edward Silvers of the Santa Clara Symphony. Later he studied under retired Chicago Symphony cellist Walter Gras. As a teenager, David played in the California Youth Symphony. • After retiring from the US Army in 1995 David began studying all the materials he could find on the making of violins, and finally in 2004 he began making violins using traditional methods and imported materials. By 2008 he began to experiment with local woods and harvesting Appalachian Red Spruce from downed trees in the Pisgah National Forest. This hi this extraordinary tonewood began appearing in many of his violins beginning in 2009 with excellent results. He also began acquiring local curley maple which is just now beginning to show up in current works. • David uses the time-tested models of both Antonio Stradivari and Andreas Guarneri. He develops his own forms, and mixes his own varnishes, and uses no power tools once the basic outline of the violin has been cut from the original wedge of wood.
