  1. RAC Configuration &Backup Gordon D. Brown RAL Luis Diaz PIC 3D WorkshopSARA, Netherlands20/21 March 2007

  2. Real Application Clusters • RAC on linux installation: • https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/PSSGroup/Installation_verbose • Further installation notes: • https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/pub/PSSGroup/ServiceDocs/SysAdminOra10gOnRHEL4.doc • Streams checklist: • https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/PSSGroup/StreamsConfigurationChecklist • Tuning steps: • https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/PSSGroup/PerformanceTuningSteps Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 2 23 October 2019

  3. RAC – Open Questions • Scalability • Depends on application • Does a read-only RAC like our CondDBs scale (almost) linearly? • How does a RAC with different services (e.g. LFC or FTS) scale? • What to prefer for same money: 3 nodes or a "better" 2-node RAC ? Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 3 23 October 2019

  4. RAC – Open Questions • Linux • Advantage of 64 bit Linux over 32? • Efforts worthwhile to change to 64 bit? Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 4 23 October 2019

  5. RAC – Open Questions • Administration • Streaming generates archive logs that require additional memory: • Is there a rule of thumb like "100 MB transfer means 100 MB storage + 100 MB * x archive logs"? • Adding a 3rd RAC node: What has to be done? • “Adding a Node to a 10g RAC Cluster” Doc ID: 270512.1 • Security Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 5 23 October 2019

  6. RAC – Open Questions • Administration • Best way to restart DB without rebooting? srvctl stop service -d trac srvctl stop listener -n tr-orac srvctl stop nodeapps -n tr-orac srvctl stop database -d trac srvctl stop asm -n tr-orac srvctl start asm -n tr-orac srvctl start database -d trac srvctl start service -d trac srvctl start nodeapps -n tr-orac srvctl start listener -n tr-orac Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 6 23 October 2019

  7. RAC – Open Questions • File System • Use ocfs? or not?? use other file system? • In Cern they use RAW devices and in PIC we install all exactly as identic as we could, so we use raw devices too. • But maybe some sites have tested ocfs. • Must we map a raw device by Oracle datafile? ex: /dev/raw/raw1 -> ../oradata/data.dbf or can we use a partitioned area and include all Oracle datafiles in it? • What is the better way (performances, maintenance)? Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 7 23 October 2019

  8. RAC – Open Questions • Network • How does Oracle manage the VIP? • What is exactly the flow with CERN? • What are the flow between the nodes (at Oracle level)? Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 8 23 October 2019

  9. Backup • CERN backup strategy: • RMAN - backups to tape • Level 0, every 2 weeks • level 1 cumulative, twice per week • level 1 differential, every day (except when the cumulative backup is done) • archivelogs backups, every 30 minutes • Retention: recovery window of 31 days (may change) • RMAN - backups to disk: • Daily refreshed with incremental recovery • Image copy delayed from production (2 days) • Allows for very fast recovery, for many failure scenarios • Regular tests of recovery procedure recovery • Open point: disaster recovery / dataguard Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 9 23 October 2019

  10. Backup – Open Questions • Recovery • Estimated size for ATLAS' & LHCb's recovery area? • RMAN: How can we "train" recovery processes? • When and how the backup and recovery *D tests will run? What do we have to do to prepare for this? Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 10 23 October 2019

  11. Backup – Open Questions • Policy • Currently I've configured RMAN to do a weekly full backup on Sunday and 6 cumulative incrementals during the rest of the week. Is this a good policy? • I'm using cumulative backups to optimize restore times. • What are other, more experienced DBA's doing? • I'm not using a catalog because I don't like the idea of needing a database in order to restore my database. Is this wise? Should I use a catalog instead of the control file? What are the advantages/disadvantages? Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 11 23 October 2019

  12. Backup – Open Questions • Config • Oracle is writing archive logs to both of my nodes. But RMAN is only running on one of them so it can't find 50% of the archive logs when it tries to backup or delete them. How do other DBA's solve this? • As you know the production database will be over 3TB, and in our case, the SAN only has around 4.5TB. It seems impossible for us to use RMAN to do a full backup, but if we only do incremental backup, it is not good for recovery. And also we have about 12TB tape library in remote server, we suppose to backup database to these tape library, does RMAN provide remote backup function? Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 12 23 October 2019

  13. Backup – Open Questions • Config • Make sure you backup your raw device • Compression • Implement CBT • Use "delete input" for archivelogs • Use "backup preview" • Flashback? • Recovery test – when? • Overhead size – let’s work out space requirements. Gordon D. Brown e-Science, RAL 13 23 October 2019
