  3. WE CAN DIVIDE LETTERS INTO THREE MAIN KINDS, DEPENDING ON: THEIR ADDRESSEES (THE PEOPLE TO WHOME THEY ARE WRITTEN) THEIR SUBJECTS OR CONTENTS (WHAT THEY ARE ABOUT)

  4. THESE ARE THE THREE KINDS OF LETTERS:

  5. SOCIAL LETTERS • THESE ARE WRITTEN MAINLY TO FRIENDS AND RELATIVES, AND ARE USUALLY RATHER “INFORMAL” IN LANGUAGE.

  6. BUISNESS LETTERS • THESE ARE WRITTEN BY PEOPLE IN CONNECTION WITH THEIR BUSINESSES OR WORK. THE LANGUAGE IS MORE “FORMAL” THAN THAT OF SOCIAL LETTER.

  7. PRIVATE LETTERS • THESE ARE “FORMAL” LETTERS WHICH MANY PEOPLE MIGHT NEED TO WRITE FROM TIME TO TIME ABOUT MATTERS OTHER THAN THEIR BUSINESSES OR WORK.

  9. THE GREETING THE GREETING MEANS “HELLO”. USUALLY, ALL OF THE WORDS, WHICH ARE A PART OF THE GREETING ARE CAPITALIZED. A COMMA FOLLOWS THE GREETING. • FORMAL LETTERS OFTEN OPEN WITH THE FOLLOWING GREETINGS: • WHEN YOU KNOW THE PERSON’S NAME: DEAR MR. / DEAR MS. / DEAR MRS. • WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW THE PERSON’S NAME: DEAR SIR / DEAR MADAM / DEAR SIR OR MADAM/

  10. THE CONTENT OF THE LETTER WE WRITE FORMAL LETTERS FOR DIFFERENT REASONS, BUT WHATEVER OUR REASON FOR WRITING; WE MUST ALWAYS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: • A CLEAR STATEMENT OF OUR REASON FOR WRITING. • A RESPECTFUL LANGUAGE • STANDARD LETTER FORMAT (SEE PREVIOUS SLIDE).

  11. THE BODY • THE BODY OF THE LETTER CONTAINS THE MAIN TEXT OR MESSAGE. • EACH PARAGRAPH SHOULD BE INDENTED. FOR EXAMPLE: • I ENJOYED RECEIVING YOUR LETTER. I AM SURE WE WILL MEET SOON IN MY COMPANY. I ENJOYED RECEIVING YOUR LETTER. I AM SURE WE WILL MEET SOON IN MY COMPANY

  12. THE CLOSING • THE CLOSING MEANS “GOOD BY”. THE FIRST WORD OF THE CLOSING BEGINS WITH A CAPITAL LETTER.
