Technology needs in light of a changing climate The identification and development of technologies, practices, and policies, both for mitigating GHG emissions as well as for adapting to the adverse physical impacts associated with climate change, are of key importance to avoid irreversible changes associated with dangerous levels of climate change

  3. Technology Needs Assessment: what? • Goals and objectives of a TNA The primary goal of a TNA is to prioritize technological means for achieving a country’s development priorities in a sustainable manner.

  4. Technology Needs Assessment: why? To identify, evaluate, and prioritize technological means both mitigation and adaptation for achieving sustainable development in developing countries, increasing resilience to climate change, and avoiding dangerous anthropogenic climate change for achieving a country’s development priorities in a sustainable manner.

  5. Technology Needs Assessment: how? When assessing technology needs with a focus on reducing GHG emissions and adaptation to climate change it is important that the technologies selected are clearly in line with the countries’ development strategies.

  6. Technology Needs Assessment: who? The TNA process is managed by a national taskforce, called the National TNA Team . It works closely together with a core group of stakeholders, as well as with wider stakeholder groups

Thailand TNA • Selected for the first round (15 countries) of global TNA project within the framework of the UNFCCC • supported by Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant financing (USD 120,000) for 2 years • scientific input on energy and climate changes issues to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) provided by UNEP Risoe Centre (URC) At Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy Technical University of Denmark

Project Objective • To identify and prioritize through country-driven participatory processes, technologies that can contribute to mitigation and adaptation goals of the participant countries, while meeting the national sustainable development goals and priorities (TNA). • To identify barriers hindering the acquisition, deployment, and diffusion of prioritized technologies. • To develop Technology Action Plans (TAP) specifying activities and enabling frameworks to overcome the barriers and facilitate the transfer, adoption, and diffusion of selected technologies.
