  2. What are Fungi? • Eukaryotic heterotrophs • Cell walls made of chitin • Most multicelluar • Except yeast • Absorb nutrients from decaying matter or bodies of hosts

  3. Structure of Fungi • Bodies of fungi are made of a thick mass of hyphae called a mycelium • Hyphae- thin filaments

  4. Reproduction in Fungi • Asexually • Budding- yeast • Breaking off of cells or hyphae • Spores- conidia • By mitosis • Sexually • Hyphae grow together • Gametangia are formed

  5. Classifying Fungi • Sac Fungi • Rhizoids- like roots • Stolons- like stems that run along the surface Stolon

  6. Club Fungi • Basidium- spore bearing structure • Stipe- stalk

  7. Imperfect Fungi • No sexual reproductive phase observed • Penicilliumnotatum • Grows on fruit • Source of antibiotic penicillin

  8. Fungi as Decomposers • Recycle nutrients by breaking down the bodies and wastes of other animals • Can you imagine a world without decomposers? • Without decay, nutrients in dead organisms would be lost forever!

  9. Fungi as Parasites • Can cause serious plant and animal diseases even in humans! • Wheat rust • Corn smut • Athlete’s foot • Ringworm

  10. Lichens • Not single organisms • Symbiotic association between fungus and a photosynthetic organism • Resistant to cold and drought

  11. Mycorrhizae • Mutualistic fungi with plant roots • Allow host plant to absorb more nutrients and water
