  1. Referencing and EndNote Web MBA Referencing APA style and an overview of EndNote Web bibliographic software . Michele Davies Samantha Oakley

  2. Welcome During this session you will learn • Why referencing is important • When to reference • What details are needed for a correct reference • How EndNoteWeb software can be used to help organise and write references

  3. What is bibliographic referencing? When writing an assignment or dissertation your own thoughts and ideas build on those of other writers and researchers. It is essential that you acknowledge those sources of information by: • Acknowledging the source within the text. • Giving full details of each item in a reference list.

  5. Why do I need to do it? • To enable your lecturer to follow up the references and find the book or journal article in a library. • To enable your lecturer to check the accuracy of the information you’ve given. • To demonstrate to your lecturer that you have read widely a range of opinions. • To avoid plagiarism (using someone else’s ideas as your own.)

  6. Why do I need to do it? Referencing is a transferrable skill! • When writing a report for work, your reader can easily see where you obtained your information. • Shows employers you can find relevant information for its needs and apply it appropriately. • If you publish a paper in a scholarly journal you will need to use the style recommended by that journal.

  7. APA 6th The style for the College of Business and Economics is APA 6th An Author-Date style similar to Harvard

  8. APA 6th What does it look like? Go to pdf

  9. Really? It looks fiddly. In short - Yes, it is! Be careful with your references. Every comma, full stop and use of italics is used for a specific reason. You can’t change the way it looks. Stick to the style and be consistent.

  10. In text citations In the text of your assignment you need to give the author(s) surname(s) , plus the year of publication, plus the page reference for a direct quote. Different ways to quote: In 2008 it was discovered..... (Jones). Jones (2008) discovered that… Recent research (Jones, 2008; Brown, 2001)…
