  1. Jackson 5 11/2 Your class is preparing a time capsule to be opened in fifteen years. Only a limited number of items will be selected to place in the capsule. What would you choose to best represent your generation? Write an essay persuading the selection committee to accept the item you have chosen.

  2. This week at a Glance Class News CHS Sports Football game @ HOME vs. Dyersburg! Charger Madness Thursday @6pm! GO BIG C!!! • Research Article’s are due Nov. 16th/17th • Clicker assignment #’s • Vocab exam Nov.4th/7th • Knowledge Bowl Meeting Thursday after school • Progress reports will be going out right before thanksgiving break

  3. Compounds • In compounds the two proportions of each kind of atom are fixed • H20 indicates that the atoms always combine with 2-Hydrogen atoms and 1-Oxygen atom

  4. Compounds cont. • The tendency of elements to combine and form depends on the # and arrangement of electrons in their atoms

  5. “Method to the Swagness”(swag vs. swagless)

  6. Electrons like to be balanced #SWAG-i.e-Swag vs. Swagless*No one likes to be swagless (unbalanced)*Everyone likes to have Swag(balanced)In order to have SWAG your first shell needs to have 2 electrons and your others need to have 8( if you can get that many)

  7. Draw in your notes the following element shells to determine if they have swag or are swagless • Potassium • Fluorine • Aluminum • Silicon • Neon • Helium • Titanium • Hydrogen • Iron

  8. Elements with Swag • Some elements such as Ne and He consist of atoms whose energy levels have SWAG • This allows them not to react with other elements because they already have SWAG (are balanced)

  9. Elements with no Swag • Elements that are no balanced (no swag) tend to go under chemical reactions • They combine in ways that cause their atoms to become stable

  10. Chemical Reaction • Combine in ways that cause their atoms to become stable • In chemical reactions, chemical bonds are broken, atoms are rearranged and new chemical bonds are formed
