How did we start
How did we start?

  • MS Department of Mental Health identified FASD as a critical issue

  • FASD Town Meeting in 2003

  • Sent representatives to SAMHSA’s System of Care meeting on FAS

  • Director, MDMH Division of Children & Youth acquired State Coordinator designation

  • Identified various Divisions within MDMH to develop plans for future

  • Began including FASD presentations in statewide conferences

  • First gathering of key providers that resulted in State FASD Task Force— September 2003

  • October 2003 – First Task Force meeting; organizational activities initiated

  • March 2004 – First MS FASD Symposium

  • April 2004 – Official designation of State FASD Coordinator by MDMH

  • In 2004, MDMH began to make limited funding available for community-based FASD projects

  • Applied for & received NGC contract in 2004

  • 2005 – hired first full-time FASD project director

  • State FASD Coordinator is now a permanent position with MDMH

  • MS AC-FASD permanently instituted with By-Laws

  • Developed a State FASD Plan to be implemented by MS AC-FASD

  • “Mainstreaming” FASD through the statewide System of Care

  • Annual FASD Symposium permanently established

  • Incorporating A&D Prevention Services

  • Incorporating Early Intervention Services

  • FASD is now included in the MDMH State Plan

  • FASD evaluation center at University of Southern Mississippi

  • State and regional FASD training

  • Participation in newly-established coalition to prevent underage drinking
