  1. 7th grade class selection!

  2. What does 7th grade look like? • All students will be placed in the appropriate core classes • ELA • Social Studies • Science • Math • Core classes may be in the morning, afternoon or spread out during the day.

  3. Required classes • Other than your core classes (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies) all 7th graders will be enrolled in one semester of P.E. and one semester of Wellness.

  4. Electives • In 7th grade you will have 3 elective class periods during the day. Remember that all 7th graders take one semester of P.E. and one semester of Wellness. • Elective classes can be semester long or year long classes. • You will select electives that add up to a combination of 4 semesters. • 2 year long classes • 4 semester long classes • 1 year long class and 2 semester long classes

  6. Class Descriptions STEM Lab (semester) Spanish 1 is an introduction to the Spanish language. You will learn basic vocabulary that will allow you to start speaking and writing Spanish. It’s an action-filled class which requires a good attitude and lots of participation. It is open to 7th graders. Are you interested in computer animation, video production, and digital music? Are you into technology: lasers, robots, flight simulators? Do you like problem solving with your peers instead of listening to lectures?  Then STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Lab is for you. In this class, you will learn how to develop media-rich presentations, web-based portfolios, and other skills that are relevant in high school and beyond. This class is a BLAST! (You can take this class more than one time—the sky is the limit!) Spanish 1 (year)

  7. Class Description Leadership (Semester) This course is designed to increase student’s awareness of team sports, fitness, and health. Students will also learn skills of fun and different sports such as team handball, pickleball, and many more. They will learn good sportsmanship, fitness and health . Student leadership is a class where you learn to become a leader of the school and help coordinate all school wide activities and make important decisions including: dances, fundraisers, community service events, teacher appreciation weeks, etc. If you want to get involved with your school this is the class for you. P.E. (semester)

  8. Class description Chorus (year) A class that will create new experiences for students in band. Students will continue to develop instrumental techniques in larger groups. Concerts and performances are scheduled throughout the year. This class is for any student interested in singing in a choir and in developing their voice. Each member will learn proper singing technique. There are no prior requirements for this class, just an enjoyment of music and singing. Band (year)

  9. Class Description Wellness (semester) This course is designed for the student interested in planning, organizing and producing Depoali’s school yearbook. Principles of mass media, journalistic writing, editing, and computer-generated page layout will also be covered. Students in this course will also dabble in some web page content design. A strong writing ability and good work ethic are traits that are needed to be successful in this class. Every 7th grader at Depoali will take Wellness 7. This class will cover total student health, fitness, nutrition, career exploration, learning styles, goal setting, academic success skills and interpersonal skills.  Students will learn how to maintain mental and physical health now and in the future. A small lab fee may be required. Yearbook (year)

  10. Class description Art (semester) If you play a stringed instrument and want to play with others in a great sounding orchestra, you will love this class. Students must have taken sixth grade strings or have taken private lessons at least the summer before. Explore the world of digital art and learn to critically analyze works of art and advertising. Create your own designs and images using digital cameras and Adobe Photoshop. You will acquire a photographer’s “eye” and produce a well-crafted portfolio of your own creative designs and art. Advanced students will complete a short film using video cameras and film editing software. Students do not need their own camera for this course. However, students may use their own cameras, as well as camera phones, for the assignments. Strings Orchestra (year)

  11. Class Description Students learn about art and artists through a variety of techniques, Including drawing, painting, and sculpture. No talent is required for this course. Students will explore scratchboards, clay/pottery, and much more. If you are Interested in art, this is the class for you. There will be a small lab fee. Arts & Crafts (year)

How do I pick my classes? • There is a class selection sheet that will be going home with you today. • On the back of the sheet are the class descriptions. • Please rank you choices in order • 1 = the class you want the most • Please DO NOT just check the boxes • CHOOSE YOUR ELECTIVES WISELY, BECAUSE CHANGES ARE NOT PERMITTED.

  14. MUSIC STUDENTS!!!!! • If you want a music class for next year please be sure to rank the class with a 1, 2, or 3.

  15. You know all about 7th grade electives. Now what? • Please take the class selection sheet with class descriptions on the back home and review them with your parent/guardian. Your selection sheet must be signed by a parent or guardian. When you have made your selections and have filled out your sheet please return it to your advisory teacher by March 14th. • Remember, the sooner you bring back your sheet the sooner Ms. Kerr can fill out your class requests in Infinite Campus! • If you do not fill out and return a class selection sheet your electives will be chosen for you.
