  1. Kindness Expressed (2 Samuel 9)

  2. 2 Samuel 4:4 4  (Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became disabled. His name was Mephibosheth.)

  3. 2 Samuel 9:1-13 (David & Mephibosheth) 1 David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

  4. 2 Now there was a servant of Saul’s household named Ziba. They summoned him to appear before David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” “Your servant,” he replied.

  5. 3 The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?” Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in both feet.”

  6. 4 “Where is he?” the king asked. Ziba answered, “He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.” 5  So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel.

  7. 6  When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, “Mephibosheth!” “Your servant,” he replied.

  8. 7 “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”

  9. 8  Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?”

  10. 9 Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s steward, and said to him, “I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family.

  11. 10 You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.” (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)

  12. 11 Then Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do.” (So Mephibosheth ate at my table like one of the king’s sons.)

  13. 12 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mika, and all the members of Ziba’s household were servants of Mephibosheth. 13 And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table; and he was lame in both feet.

  14. 1. David pursues keeping his promise of KINDNESS 1 David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul whom I can show kindness…” ‘do CHeSeD’ = show COVENANT FAITHFULNESS, MERCY, STEADFAST LOVE, (‘dat ik Gods weldaadigheid bij hem doe’, verbondsgetrouw tonen)

  19. Paul: 4  But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5  to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.

  20. 6Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7  So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. Galatians 4:4-7

  21. Matthew Henry (1672-1714): “Mankind was convicted of rebellion against God, and, like Saul’s house, under a sentence of rejection from Him, was not only brought low and impoverished, but lame and disabled, made so by the Fall.

  22. “The Son of God enquires after this degenerate race, that enquired not after Him, comes to seek and save them.

  23. To those of them that humble themselves before Him, He restores the forfeited inheritance, He entitles them to a better paradise than that which Adam lost, and takes them into communion with Himself, sets them with His children at His table, and feasts them with the banquet of Heaven.”

  24. Am I seeking the King, or is He seeking me? • Am I offering to serve Him, or is He offering to serve me? • Do I need to feel useful, or is it enough to be loved?

  25. DAVID: • Pursues Kindness • Keeps his Promise • Restores Inheritance • Has Table Fellowship MEPHIBOSHETH: • Shows Up • Honors the King • Humbles himself • Enters a new life!
