  2. Why is it important? The collection of data on patients’ ethnicity helps the NHS ensure that it is providing equity of access, delivery and outcomes for all service users.

  3. But…….. • Despite it being mandatory for almost ten years, we are still a long way from 100% completeness • In 2003/04 over 23% of FCEs on HES for East Midlands providers did not have a ‘useable’ ethnic group code

  8. Perverse situation has arisen • Data is not being used because of poor quality • But, because it is not being used there seems to be no incentive to improve it

  9. Staff training • Able to demonstrate appreciation of need to collect the data • Know how to collect the data • Able to deal with questions and concerns about the data
