  2. Discovering What You Want • In life you need to be specific with what you want and to have a clear goal set in mind, don’t be the person who doesn’t know what their future holds. • Have goals that can be achieved, don’t do anything you know you’re not capable of handling or doing.

  3. Master Student Qualities • Mastery- attaining a level of skill that goes beyond technique. • Qualities of a master student: • Works hard without any effort. • Relaxed and alert. • Disciplined and spontaneous. • Focused and fun loving. • Mastery cannot be taught, it can only be learned and experienced.

  4. This Book Is worthless….. • If you only read it, in order for this book to become effective you need to take action and use the ideas in it. • The purpose of this book is to help you make a successful transition to higher education by setting up a pattern of success that will last you throughout your life.

  5. The Values Of Higher Education • You may find yourself wondering if all this college work will “pay off someday”. • The answer is simply yes. The main reason being college graduates on average earn more than high school graduates, and that’s just one potential payoff. • Here are some others: • Gain a broader vision • Discover your values. • Learn skills that apply across careers.

  6. Making The Transition To Higher Education • Whether you are fresh from high school, or back from decades away from the classroom there's many differences between secondary and post-secondary education. The sooner you realize these differences the sooner you can deal with them.

  7. Making The Transition To Higher Education Cont. Here’s a few of the differences between secondary & post-secondary education: • New academic standards. • New level of independence. • Differences in teaching styles • More students and diversity.

  8. Succeeding In School At any Age • There's multiple things that can be done to be successful in school if you feel you’re not up for the task. Here are a few pointers that may come in handy. • Acknowledge your concerns. • Ease into it. • Delegate tasks. • Review subjects before you start classes.

  9. Enrolling Your Instructor Into Your Success • Are you faced with a instructor you don’t like? You have two options: • 1. Label the instructor as a “dud” and when you have the opportunity, write a poor (teacher’s) review. • 2. Don’t give your power away, and take control of your education.

  10. Enrolling Your Instructor Into Your Success cont. Here are some suggestions to help you take control of your education: • Research the instructor. • Show interest in class. • Don’t release judgments. • Get to know the instructor.

  11. Motivation Motivation – the ability to do a task even when you don’t feel like it. • We all as students need to be motivated so we can be the best we can be at what we’re doing. Here are some ways to stay motivated: • Promise it. • Befriend the discomfort. • Sweeten the task. • Ask for support • Compare payoffs to cost.

  12. Summary • The Introduction chapter is basically saying we as students need to work hard to become whatever we want to be, because its not going to come easy. Its also gives us some guidelines on how to discover what we want to be and some qualities we need to become a master student.
