  1. HTML5 + ePUB 3 Chewy Chong IE Developer Relations

  2. Agenda • HTML5 101 • ePUB3 101 • Who’s the hero? • What should I do? • IE10 Demo

  3. HTML Basic • HTML • CSS • JS • HTML5 == updated HTML, CSS and JS (not just HTML)

  4. HTML5 • Coming of age for the web… • Formation of standards • Connectivity + web browsers everywhere • Everything in HTML + critical new features • Offline, Database, Storage, Canvas, Video, Audio, Fonts, Touch/Pointers, background work (requests and processing), responsive / adaptive layouts • Still a bit more to go • Realizing the goal isn’t about standards >> Interop • DRM, streaming, Touch/Pointers, licensing • Deeper integration into the device/OS/user experience

  5. ePUB3 • Built on HTML5 • HTML5 goodness + CSS + JS • Specification standard for a single publication package • Everything a reader needs is in a single ZIP package (fonts, HTML,JS,CSS, images, videos, audio, etc) • DRM • Did I mention the guts is all HTML5?

  6. ePUB3 • Cookies, rainbows, unicorn • Readers limited • Publishing system support limited • Specification is “loose” and allows implementation freedom • JS freedom, access online, DRM, Video encoding • Momentum… where YOUR content is not king • Device centric, reseller centric, app / os centric

  7. CONTENT is king • Beware of false prophets (vendors, consultants, resellers, device makers, browser developer relations) • Innovate, add value to, buttress your content

  8. What should I be doing? • Hire more nerds (web aware) that reports into you or your business • Plan / envision the future where content is king • Envision how your users will engage your content (think scenarios) • Establish your foundation / backend “plumbing” • Customer information / behavior • Content relationships • Social support • Support for enriching / complementing the content you have • Advertising • … • Focus on innovating, adding, giving more • DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE of short term gains by defending, protecting, restricting your users (being driven by the fear of loss)

  9. What should I be doing? • Web Experience • Accessed via any browser • Engages online • Direct relationship plumbing • Web App • Accessed via any modern browser • Engages online / offline • (value add content) • Direct relationship • HTML5 • CSS • JS • Fonts • Videos • Audio • ePUB 3 • Accessed via an app or device • Engages online / offline • (value add content) • Relationship via 3rd party Now • Device / OS Native App • Accessed via an app store • Engages online / offline • Native app has browser functionality but more power offered by apps • Engages online / offline • (value add content)
