  3. Let’s try another one… • Which is bigger: 17 or 12? 17! • Another good answer!

  4. I bet you can do this… • Which is bigger: 1 or 3 ?4 4 How do we figure this out?

  5. Well, let’s think about it like pizza! of a pizza is ONE slice out of 4. 14 Like this  and 34 of a pizza is THREE slices out of 4. Like this 

  6. So which is BIGGER? or 14 34 ?

  7. So which is BIGGER? • Well this makes sense! • ¾ is bigger than ¼ because 3 pieces out of the 4-piece pizza is more than 1 piece out of the 4-piece pizza! • Let’s try another one.  34 !

  8. I bet you can do this… • Which is bigger: 1 or 2 ?2 2 How do we figure this out?

  9. WAIT A MINUTE. 22 Isn’t equal to a WHOLE? 12 so it’s GOTTA be more than …right?

  10. Let’s prove it! 22 Well… compared to 12

  13. So which is BIGGER? • I could visualize that in my mind really well. • ¾ is bigger than ¼ because 3 pieces out of the 4-piece pizza is more than 1 piece out of the 4-piece pizza! • Let’s try another one.  34 !

  14. NOW it’s going to get tough! • Which is bigger: 1 or 1 ?8 5 This is WAY trickier! The denominators are different! YIKES!

  15. Well, let’s think about it like pizza again! of a pizza is ONE slice out of 8. 18 Like this  and 15 of a pizza is ONE slice out of 5. Like this 

  16. So which is BIGGER? or 18 15 ?

  17. So which is BIGGER? • So this tells us that FRACTIONS are different than WHOLE NUMBERS. • Because even though 8 is bigger than 5, 1/5 is bigger than 1/8. • Let’s try a tricky one this time! 15 !

  18. Which is bigger? 2 or 2 ?4 5 Think about it like pizza again!

  19. Let’s see… of a pizza is TWO slices out of 4. 24 Like this  and 25 of a pizza is TWO slices out of 5. Like this 

  20. So which is BIGGER? or 24 25 ?

  21. So which is BIGGER? • So this tells us that FRACTIONS are different than WHOLE NUMBERS. • Because even though 5 is bigger than 4, 2/4 is bigger than 2/5. • Hmmm… let’s try one more. 24 !
