The verb agrees with the subject, not with a noun or pronoun in the phrase. • One of the boxes is open • The people who listen to that music are few. • The team captain, as well as his players, is anxious. • The book, including all the chapters in the first section, is boring. • The woman with all the dogs walks down my street.

  3. You Know It, Now Show It… • 1. One of my favorite teachers are/is teaching English. • 2. The boy who is attending the game with his aunt, two dogs, and a fish seem/seems pretty popular. • 3. The monkey, as well as two motorcycle gang members, like/likes to beat up shop teachers. • 4. The gang, including the motorcyclist and the monkey, is/are planning to fight Mr. Ross. • 5. Neither Mr. Ross nor his students seem/seems worried about the expected attack. • Parents or Mr. Keaton plans/plan to meet with the angry monkeys this afternoon.
