  2. What is Netiquette? • Network etiquette • Do’s and Don’ts of online communication. • Common Courtesy Online • Informal “Rules of the Road” of Cyberspace • Online Safety Barrow County Schools

  3. Rule #1 –Don’t hurt feelings with e-mail. • Online – People cannot tell if you are joking. • To let someone know how you feel (happy, sad, angry, joking,etc.) You can use smiley’s, or sad’s, or clip art. Barrow County Schools

  4. Rule #2: Respect other people’s online rights. • If someone sends you e-mail which threatens you or makes you feel uncomfortable, talk to a teacher, parent, or any other adult right away. Barrow County Schools

  5. Rule #3: Avoid insulting someone – may result in a “Flame War” • “Flame War” is when angry people try to punish each other with e-mail. • Mailbox Jam • Nasty E-mails • Follow “Golden Rule” Barrow County Schools

  6. Rule #4: If someone insults you – Be Calm • Starting a “flame war” is serious business on the internet. • Ignore the message • Send polite message asking for explanation. • Could be misunderstanding Barrow County Schools

  7. Rule #5: Avoid “crashing” discussion groups or forums. • Online talks with others who have things in common. • Listserv, bulletin board, chat group. • If you join just to irritate, people will get angry. Barrow County Schools

  8. Rule # 6: Respect the privacy of other people. • If someone tells you a secret (confidential) then keep it secret. • Includes passwords, full names, addresses, or interests. • NEVER share your password with others. Barrow County Schools

  9. Rule #7: Be responsible online • When using the computer, YOU are in control. • Avoid harming other people • Do not take things that are not yours (files, passwords, credit card numbers, etc.). Barrow County Schools

  10. Rule #8: Help others learn more about the Net. • Net is growing quickly. • Difficult to keep up. • Help other students, your parents, and even your teachers – you may learn something as well. Barrow County Schools

  12. Rules for Online Safety • “I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parent’s work address/telephone number, or my school location without my parent’s permission. Barrow County Schools

  14. Rules for Online Safety • I will never agree to get together with someone I “meet” online without first checking with my parents. If parents agree, it will be in a public place and I will bring one of my parents along. Barrow County Schools

  16. Rules for Online Safety • I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. I will contact my parents immediately. Barrow County Schools
