  2. Use “=average(DATA)” to get the mean for your two sets of data…

  3. …use “=sqrt(var(DATA)/N)” to get the SEM (standard error of the mean) Notice N is 5 here; you’ll need to count your own data

  4. Click the Chart button to open the Chart Wizard Choose “Column”

  5. Open Series tab

  6. Click Add

  7. Specify one condition’s name…

  8. …then specify the Mean

  9. Repeat those steps to name the other condition

  10. Step through the Wizard’s tabs and do what follows on the next slides…

  11. Chart title? Abscissa? Ordinate?

  12. Untick the “Category (X) axis (gets rid of “1”)

  13. Untick all here

  14. Show Legend

  15. We now have a histogram but the font is too small… make it 14 Point, BOLD Arial…

  17. Now for SEMs: RIGHT CLICK the Control bar of the histogram & choose Format Data Series…

  18. Specify “Custom” Error amount…

  20. Look in Fill Effects for cross hatchings Make sure the Patterns are clear…I’ve chosen black & white (avoid relying on colours alone)

  21. Copy & paste your histogram into your article…make it BIG (between ½ page and a whole page)

  22. Give your histogram a sensible “Figure Legend”…e.g… Figure 1. Mean percentage recalled from test in Experiment 1. Error bars indicate one standard error of the mean. See Procedure for full details.
