Belize Environment Outlook • In 1995, the UNEP governing council instructed the institutions to keep the Global Environment under review in view of the various environmental concerns. • Hence, the birth of the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report. • Since its inception the GEO has revolutionized from global ideology to being regional then national and currently even local.

  3. THE GEO BELIZE PROJECT • Preparation of Concept paper highlighting issues of environmental concern and its importance for the country of Belize. • In December 2005, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) contacted UNEP seeking financial and technical assistance for the development of the Belize Environment Outlook (Geo Belize ) Report; • In January 2006, the Ministry partnered with the University of Belize (UB) to develop the GEO Belize report;

  4. In January 2006, the MNRE, UB and UNEP signed an MoU for the elaboration of the First Belize Environment Outlook (GEO Belize 2006) report. • Planning initiated to identify activities to be conducted during the process.

  5. GEO CONCEPT GEO is a participatory process for environmental assessment and reporting, aimed at bridging the gap between science and policy decision-making

  6. WHY GEO? The GEO process and methodology is interesting. It addresses the following: • Stakeholder participation • Broad consultation • Capacity building • Data standardization and harmonization at national, regional and global scales • Scenario development • Objective evaluation

  7. WEAKNESSES • Limited expertise in carrying capacity evaluation • Huge data gaps • Financial constraints • University of Belize had problems in Meeting deadlines as per work plan. • Limited Personnel

  8. BENEFITS OF GEO • Facilitates the mainstreaming of environmental issues in national development plans • Integrated environmental analysis • Policy evaluation • Future perspectives • Plan of action development
