  2. Membership Statistics SAMIEEE + Geographic Membership Status Members in Arrear Present status in IEEE and R8 sections Activities to reduce the amount of arrears Membership Promotion & Recruitment at IEEE Conferences in R8 What has been achieved in 2007 Plans for 2008 Information, Education and Training of Section Officers E-mails, MD Newsletter, Web-sites Webcasts / Face to Face meetings R8 MD Meeting Agenda Malta

  3. IEEE Membership March 2008 Statistics

  4. Membership Statistics • At the Membership Development web page the last statistics you can find is from July 2007... • To get statistical overviews for organizational units you have to go to SAMIeeewww.ieee.org/organizations/vols/samieee/positions.html • select “Access Membership Geographical Statistics” • There you can select the organizational unit and the months

  5. Due to the transition impact of IEEE’s new business management system, the IEEE provided a one-month grace-period to about 8,300 members who, at the time of running the Terminator, had (1) a pending service inquiry and (2) initiated, but not completed their online renewal. These members were suppressed from the Terminator process. The table below shows the number of members by Region whose active membership status was Terminated, and the respective counts of members on the suppression list. In March, the remaining terminations occurred.

  6. Total Number of Arrears, Active Members and the Percentage of Arrears at the End of March • Region 1 6851 33047 17.2 % • Region 2 5612 28304 16.5 % • Region 3 6219 26554 19,0 % • Region 4 4589 20265 18.5 % • Region 5 5657 25120 18.4 % • Region 6 11409 51131 18.3 % • Region 7 3264 13786 19.1 % • Region 8 16972 53511 24.1 % • Region 9 7984 9463 45,8 % • Region 10 24506 56030 30,4 % • Total IEEE 93063 317211 22.7 %

  7. Region 8 Membership Growth

  8. R8 Arrears – End of March 2008 • 53511active members (a) • 16972 arrears (b) • b/(a+b)=0.2408 or 24.08% • If all arrears would renew, we would have 70483 members... • Every year we loose a hugh number of members and we have to make big efforts to recruit new members to keep the steady growth

  9. Section Arrears Lists Using SAMIEEE To get the list of Arrears of your Organizational Unit, go to SAMIEEE www.ieee.org/organizations/vols/samieee/positions.html • Click Access SAMIEEE • Insert you User ID and Password, and Login • Click SAMIeee in Shared Folders • Click Geographic Predefined Query and you will get the list of Predefined Queries • From the list of Predefined Queries select • (GEO) Arrears: Member Contact Info By Section-By Grade. Download to Excel.

  10. Action of the UK&RI Section • 2100 personal emails sent to Arrears • 165 replies • 90 with some negative comments • Limited access to the digital library (11) • No enhancement, no sufficient benefits (12) • Renewal system problems, poor service (33) • Retired, changed or lost the job, financial problems (22) • 70 already renewed or were going to renew • 58 wrong addresses

  11. Recruit New Members • The half-year dues period starting on March 1st is a peak recruitment time • It allows people to test IEEE membership for a smaller initial fee • New memberspay half-year dues when they sign up from 1 March through 31 August • Services commence immediately upon joining and continue through December 31 • Members joining in March receive a bonus of 4 months of extra service above and beyond the six months they are paying for

  12. Important MD Information • Member-Get-A-Member ProgramBonus of 15$ per recruited member • 50% Membership dues reductionLow income < US$ 12 600 in prior year Unemployed Retired • Appoint active MD Officers in your section • MD is every member´s business

  13. Membership Development at Conferences • IEEE sponsored and cosponsored Conferences are excellent occasions to promote IEEE and Society memberships by organizing a Membership Development Desk at the Conference • This activity should be performed jointly by the local Section and Regional MD Officers, the Region Conference Coordination Committee, the Chair (or an appointed member) of the Conference Organization Committee and the IEEE Staff • The local Section and Region MD Officers in cooperation with the Region Conference Coordination Committee should identify IEEE sponsored and cosponsored conferences in countries covered by the local Section and the Region

  14. MD Desk • An MD Desk or Booth shoud be operated near the Conference Registration Desk as an IEEE Information Center • The MD Desk should be equipped with IEEE banners and flags, promotional material including application brochures, IEEE magazines and give-aways (pencils, candies) • The local Section or Region MD Officer with the Conference organizers should arrange that the MD promotional material from Piscataway should be requested and received on time • If possible, a video about IEEE should be running. The Desk should also include demonstrations of IEEE online facilities • In cooperation with the Registration Desk, if possible, there should be a possibility to join IEEE online. As a general rule, conference participats joining IEEE at the Conference should pay the reduced fee for members • The Desk should be attended by IEEE volunteers familiar with IEEE advantages and activities. The local Section and its MD Officer together with the Conference organizers should look for volunteers. Student members are often interested to staff desks

  15. General Comments for R8 >100 IEEE Conferences / Symposia in Region 8 Ideal platform for IEEE promotion and recruitment of new members Difficult to find local support at conf. Non – IEEE conferences Membership Promotion and Recruitment at IEEE Conferences in R8

Promotion at IEEE (Society) Conferences in R8 sections IEEE desk/ booth with MD material, Posters, Brochures and Application forms Desk/booth hosted by local volunteers and students Promotion talk at conference opening or dinner Organization by local section volunteers (MD officers + others) with support from R8 MD and IEEE staff Need help from Section chairs and MDs and R8 CCSC : To select suitable conferences in R8 sections in 2008 To inform R8 MD on conference name, date and site To contact colleagues and friends in Conference committees To help R8 MD in making the necessary arrangements Membership Promotion and Recruitment at IEEE Conferences in R8

  20. In the ideal case, the Society should inform the local Section and Region about its plans. Promotion arrangements could be made jointly between local Section, R8 MD, R8 CCSC, and the Conference Organizing Committee. Societies should make Pre-conference announcement for non-members to join IEEE and pay the lower Conference registration fee for members. Conference registration is usually done online, a link should be given to join IEEE online Membership Promotion and Recruitment at IEEE Conferences worldwide

  21. IEEE Goal to promote and recruit IEEE membership at all conferences IEEE BoD to oblige TAB / Societies to arrange IEEE promotion activities at all Society conferences worldwide There should be a policy for MD Desks at conferencesin the IEEE Conference Manual Membership Promotion and Recruitment at IEEE Conferences worldwide
