  2. OEQ Reminders • Take 7-10 minutes to plan your writing. • MOWAW – blend it in throughout your essay – connecting it to each body paragraph. • Write in present tense; no personal pronouns, novels are underlined. • TREX (EX) (EX)

  3. The Poisonwood Bible • Have Book One “Genesis” read by the start of class next Thursday 2/14. • Each book is named after a Bible verse. There are seven total. • Each book will open with a highly symbolicepigraph(in the form of a Bible verse.) • The story will be told with five different female narrators (so the book is essentially an omniscient point of view.) • The only main character whose voice is “missing” is the father’s, Nathan Price. As you read, think about why Kingsolver made this choice.

The story will open with the mother/wife Orleanna Price, in present day, looking back on the family’s time in Africa. • Remember that this family is from Georgia, they are southern Baptists, and the head of the household, Nathan Price, is a minister. • He wants to spread the word of God to the Congolese, thus the missionary trip to the Congo. • The Prices will be living in a small village in the Congo called Kilanga.

As you’re reading, note the massive culture shock the Prices will experience in the Congo. • The four Price sisters range in age from 15 to 5 • Rachel – 15 • Leah and Adah – twins (a little over a year younger than Rachel) • Ruth May – 5 • Each girl will take turns telling “her” story within each of the story’s books. (There are seven total.)

For next class… • Please have both “The Lady and the Pet Dog” stories read by next class. • Jot down differences you note between the two stories, as well as questions, memorable dialogue, noteworthy style, etc. • What’s the purpose of these two stories? • Why do you think Oates chose to create a modern version of Chekhov’s story? What does it accomplish? • Read “Genesis” for Thursday and work on DJs.
