  1. Shiphandling

  2. Bridge Watch Team

  3. Bridge Equipment • Radio hand Sets/speakers • Status Boards • Chart Table • Gyro repeaters • Magnetic compass • Radar repeaters • Alarms/light panels, 1MC • IC ciruits • SCC - EOT/Helm or ITC/Helm

  4. Backing 1/3 25 RPM 2/3 50 RPM FULL 100 RPM Ahead 1/3 025 RPM 2/3 050 RPM STD 075 RPM FULL 100 RPM FLK I 125 RPM FLK II 150 RPM FLK III >150 RPM Bells

  5. Bells • GT - Controlled by pitch and speed of the propellar • Diesel - controlled by speed • Steam - controlled by the speed + 12 kts

  6. Controllable Forces • Propellers - • single - turn clockwise • double- • STBD - clockwise • PORT - counter clockwise • Side Force - due to the rotation of the screw • none on a twin screw • will force in the direction of rotation. It is as if the screw is walking on the bottom

  7. Controllable Forces • Rudder - Usually behind the prop to maximize the thrust

  8. Uncontrollable Forces • Bernoulli’s • UNREP • suction • Bow and stern cushions • Shallow Water Effects • Pounding • Loss of rudder effectiveness • Sink due to bernoulli’s • Squat

  9. Uncontrollable Forces • Wind - bigger problem on a carrier • Current • Helmsman

  10. Definitions • Pivot Point - The point on the centerline about which the ship turns • forward • small - last frame of the bridge • big - forward of the bridge • Astern • stern of the ship

  11. Definitions • Turning circle - line scribed by the pivot point in 360 degree turn • Rudder • Speed - real slow and fast increase the diameter • Advance - the distance gained toward the original course • Transfer - the distance gained in the direction of the turn

  12. Definitions • Tactical Diameter - the amount of transfer made in 180 turn • Standard - std rudder and bell • Reduced - any speed and full rudder • Kick - swinging of the stern • Surge - the amount of forward motion while slowing to a slower speed.

  13. MOB • Pass word • Watch/float/smoke • Swing stern away • Select maneuver • 6+ blasts, oscar, red red pulsating • Notify company • Notify CO\XO • Man helo or boat (ready and make leeward) • Ensure CIC and top are doing their jobs • Musters

  14. Types of MOBs • Anderson • Racetrack • Williamson • Choice depends on time of day, ship, ships in company, sea state and water temp
