  3. A long time ago, in a galaxy, far, far away… • We had vacuum tubes! • And then there was transistors • Some punch cards • At last, a keyboard! • Direct manipulation of graphical objects (using a light-pen) • The mouse • Windows • Would you like to own a Rolls-Royce for $2.50?

  4. History: Application Types • Drawing programs • Text editing • Spreadsheets • Hypertext • Computer Aided Design (CAD) • Video Games

  5. Well, that’s all well and good, but… Have you ever wanted to do this?

  6. There is a human side to Computer Science! • User emotion Cyberphobia and Technostress • Has technology evolved faster than we? Anthropomorphism Sex-typing Age Education Trust in Automation

  7. Anthropomorphism • Attributing human qualities to a non-human entity • Superior intellect? • My computer hates me! • Do you suspect your refrigerator of mutiny? • Threatened by images present on monitor • Excuse me, but would you please show me my email now?

  8. Gender-Typing • Users respond differently to female-voiced systems • 98% males, 85% females attribute male characteristics to the computer • Why the lack of female interest?

  9. Age • Older generation typically less willing to use computers in everyday tasks • Physical limitations in use • Youth assume computers are a natural and integral part of living • So you can play Metroid, but can you reformat your hard drive?

  10. Automation • Do you trust a machine to make life or death decisions for you? • OJ factory simulation
