  1. Bell Work: • On a piece of real paper, write a description of your favorite outdoor location (a campground, a place you played at as a kid, the lake, etc.). • Why do you like this particular natural location? • How does it change depending on the time of day/year? • When did/do you go to this place?

  2. Naturalism Of Mice and Men employs a literary genre called "naturalism," a type of literature where the narrator looks at the characters as though they're scientific specimens: objectively and dispassionately. Naturalist novels often depict the world as a place where you have to fight to survive in a universe that has no morality and doesn't care about you. Uplifting stuff, eh?

  3. Naturalism • Naturalism suggests the role of family background, social conditions, and environment shapes human character. Thus, naturalistic writers wrote stories based on the idea that environment determines and governs human character. • John Steinbeck is one of the more popular writers of the school of American naturalism. • His most famous naturalistic works: Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath.

  4. Naturalism Activity • Read the first two paragraphs from Of Mice and Men chapter 1. • I will provide this for you. • Highlight or underline words and phrases that provide naturalistic detail. • Hint: Look for descriptions that are realistic in detail, as if the author is studying the scenery. • Answer the questions on the back of the page I gave you.
