  1. Exponents Tutorial 3f

  2. exponent base An Exponent is : a number, letter, or algebraic expression written above and to the right of another number, letter, or expression called the base. In the expressions x2 and xn, the number 2 and the letter n are the exponents respectively of the base x. x 2

  3. The exponent indicates the power to which the base is to be raised. This means that if you have x3 then you would multiply x by itself three times : x3 = x  x  x or 33 = 3  3  3 Any number to zero power (40) equals 1.

  4. Exponent Rules If two numbers having the same bases are being multiplied, add the exponents of those numbers. x2  x3 = x(2+3) = x5 or 32  33 = 3(2+3) = 35 or 75  74 =79

  5. Exponent Rules If two numbers having the same bases are being divided, subtract the exponent of the 2nd term from the 1st term. x3 ÷ x2 = x(3-2) = x1 or 53 ÷ 52 = 5(3-2) = 51 or 27 ÷ 23 =24

  6. Exponent Rules If an exponent is being raised by another exponent then multiply the exponents. (x3)2 = x3 x3 = x6 or (62)4 = 68

  7. Answer the Following Questions: base 1. 23 2 is the exponent base 2. 310 10 is the exponent base 3. 3x x is the exponent base 3. 121 12 is the exponent

  8. Answer the Following Questions: 10 1. 102 = 20 100 6 2. 3(1 + 2) = 27 312 4 2. 22 = 8 12 1 2. 990 = 99 14980

  9. Answer the Following Questions: 101 1. 102  103 = 105 106 42 2. 46 ÷ 44 = 41 40 1213 3. (126)7 = 1242 1267 9 = 4. (32)1 27 6
