  1. D.O.P. Direct Object Pronoun

  2. What IS a D.O.P? A pronoun is a word that REPLACES a noun! • A DOP is a type of PRONOUN • What’s a pronoun? • It replaces any noun that DIRECTLY receives the ACTION in a sentence. • A DOP answers the questions: Who? & What? • What do you wear in winter? • Who are we waiting for?

  3. How do you form a DOP? • Replace the NOUN with the DOP that matches the gender and number of the noun. • lo = singular masculine (ej. el paraguas) • la = singular feminine (ej. la camiseta) • los = plural masculine (ej. los shorts) • las = plural feminine (ej. lasgafas de sol)

  4. ¡Practicamos! • What DOP would you use to REPLACE the following nouns? el traje de baño los pantalones el abrigolasgafas de sol la bufanda los impermeables la gorra el gorro laschaquetas la falda los lo lo las la los la lo las la

  5. When do you use a D.O.P? • You can only replace a noun with a DOP if that noun DIRECTLY receives the action of the sentence. • First, identify the noun you want to replace and the DOP that matches the noun The monkey wears a scarf. a scarf = la bufanda, so the DOP is “la”

  6. Now what do I do with the DOP? • After you identify the noun and DOP that will replace it, you must put it in the right spot! • Almost ALWAYS the DOP goes the conjugated verb Ej. El mono lleva la bufanda. El mono lleva. BEFORE la

  7. What do you mean almost? • If you have two verbs next to each other you get two options – sweet! • It’s still correct to put the DOP before the conjugated verb - or - • You can attach it to the end of the infinitive verb Ej. El mono quierellevar la bufanda. El mono la quierellevar - o – El mono quierellevarla

  8. Resumen PASOS • Find the noun that DIRECTLY receives the action • Choose the DOP that matches the noun • REPLACE the noun with the DOP by placing it before the conjugated verb y ¡ yaestá!

  9. ¡Practicamos! Lo lleva. • El mono lleva un gorro. • El leónllevaunagorra. • El mono come un sándwich. • El león come unahamburguesa. • Yoquierosacarlasfotos. • ¿Prefieresbeber la limonada? La lleva. Lo come. La come. Las quierosacar. Quierosacarlas. ¿La prefieresbeber? ¿Prefieresbeberla?

  10. The WHOLE picture… • We can use DOPs to talk about PEOPLE too (remember that a DOP answers the question What? and Who?) So… lo, la, los, and las can also represent él, ella, ellos, and ellas respectively. we me me nos you You all te os he, she, it them, you all lo la los las

  11. Did you notice that extra accent mark? ¡OJO! Whenever you ADD stuff to a verb, you have to ADD an accent mark to maintain the pronunciation. Attach a DOP Add an Accent mark
