  1. INTRODUCTION OPEN RESPONSE QUESTION FROM MCAS SPRING 2004, GRADE 10, #17 The following is an “Open Response” question. It is important to practice these types of questions in preparation for the State Mandated MCAS. This exercise will help you walk through the process. There will also be some reference links to assist you.

  2. HOW TO ANSWER AN OPEN RESPONSE QUESTION Be sure to • Read all parts of each question carefully. • Make each response as clear, complete and accurate as you can. • Check all your work!

  3. TOPIC Identify and use the properties of operations on real numbers, including associative, commutative, and distributive properties and the existence of the identity and inverse elements for addition and multiplication. Properties

  4. QUESTION #17 Given the following true statements (equations) find the value of the real numbers p, t, v, and z. (v)(p)= v, v not equal to zero 8z = p v + 5 = t t+ p = p

  5. A What is the numerical value of p? Write the equation or equations you used to find its numerical value and explain your reasoning. HINT Which of the four given equations might help you find the value of p? v(p) =v What number can you multiply v by to get v? (identity)

  6. B What is the numerical value of t? Write the equation or equations you used to find its numerical value and explain your reasoning. HINT Which of the four given equations might help you find the value of t? t + p = p What number can you add to p to get p? (identity for addition)

  7. C What is the numerical value of v? Write the equation or equations you used to find its numerical value and explain your reasoning. HINT Which of the four given equations might help you find the value of v? V + 5 = t You already know t. Subtract 5 from both sides. (subtraction property of equality, undo addition with subtraction (inverse))

  8. D What is the numerical value of z? Write the equation or equations you used to find its numerical value and explain your reasoning HINT Which of the four given equations might help you find the value of z? 8z = p You already know p. Divide both sides of the equation by 8. (division property of equality, undo multiplication with division (inverse))

  10. EVALUATION Score Description 4 The response demonstrates a thorough understanding of the area. 3 The response demonstrates a general understanding of the area. 2 The response demonstrates a partial understanding of the area. 1 The response demonstrates a minimal understanding of the area. 0 The response is incorrect or contains some correct work that is irrelevant to the skill or concept being measured. The page is blank. View students answers for value points 4 to 0
