  5. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #2 – Faithlessness • Giving thanks is the spontaneous expression of those who have a genuine faith and believe in God • Person who refuses to believe, can never really be thankful - Rom 1:20-21 • We must believe that God is before thanksgiving has meaning - Psa 100:1-5

  6. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #2 – Faithlessness • If you don't believe in God, how can you believe it is He who gives?

  7. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #2 – Faithlessness • If you don't give thanks, do you really believe? • Poor worship attendance is because poor faith • Poor singing is because of poor faith • Poor response to God is due to poor faith in God

  8. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #3 – Discontent • Before we can genuinely be thankful, we must develop contentment - 1 Tim 6:6-8

  9. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #3 – Discontent • Too many suffer from the "thanks...but" syndrome • Grateful as far as the gift goes…but are not satisfied • “Thanks…but why didn't I get more?” • “Thanks…but why did I not get something else?”

  10. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #3 – Discontent • Consider what pilgrims had to be grateful for • 46 had died (102 started the voyage on the Mayflower) • Only 3 couples escaped death of one of the partners • Only a few (minimum) personal possessions • Crude log huts • Only 20 acres of corn • The thin margin of survival made them aware of how precious their meager blessings were!

  11. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #3 – Discontent • Learn with Paul - Phil 4:11-12, Heb 13:5-6

  12. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #4 – Selfishness • Those who have been blessed by God must learn to be a blessing

  13. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #4 – Selfishness • Matt 18:23-35 • 10,000 talents = 150,000 years of labor. (15 years labor = 1 talent) • 100 denari = 100 days worth of labor • Not showing mercy to others indicates not thankful - Matt. 18:33

  14. A Thankful Gratitude • Barrier #4 – Selfishness • Selfishness says: • “Why should I be thankful, I earned it myself” • “I deserved more than I got” • “Why help others, they don't help me” (Why say “rejoice in the Lord”?)
