  1. Selection and Reconsideration Policy Nicole Blood Fall 2011 Collection Development LIBM-6360 Dr. Rickman

  2. School • The School Policy and Procedure Manual was located in the library. The LMS was able to walk right to the manual. • The manual was located in a binder consisting of 90 pages. • This policy and procedure manual is for all schools in the school district.

  3. Includes: • Statement on Intellectual Freedom • Library Bill of Rights • Access to Resources and Services in the School Library Media Program • The Freedom to Read • North Central Accreditation Standards • Information on the Collection • AASL Statement on Confidentiality of Library Records • 8 pages that explain the job responsibilities of the Library Media Specialist, support staff, student aides and library media volunteers along with an application form for the library media volunteer.

  4. Selection Criteria • Objective: is to implement, enrich and support the educational program of the school. • Includes 6 AASL responsibilities of the school Library Media Center. • Selection is to be a cooperative process involving the media staff, curriculum consultants, teachers and students. • Materials purchased are considered on the basis of: • Overall purpose, timelines or permanence, quality of writing/production/binding/accuracy, reputation of publisher/producer, among others

  5. Selection Criteria • In selecting materials for purchase the materials specialist evaluates the existing collection and consults: • reputable, unbiased, professionally prepared selections aids including but not limited to W. Wilson’s Children’s Catalog, W. Wilson’s Junior High/Middle School Catalog W. Wilson Senior High School Catalog. Booklist, Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, Hornbook, School Library Journal, VOYA • Specialist from all subjects • Rewrite in green

  6. Gifts • Gift Material are judges for selection as stated above (referring to the selection process) and are accepted or rejected by these standards. • Rewrite: Donations of Materials will be judged by the same selection standards that apply to purchased materials, as noted in the Library’s materials selection policy. The cost of processing, availability of space and the physical condition of the item are also factors in the selection process all personal property, if accepted, accepted only on the condition that it may be retained, sold, given away or discarded at the discretion of the Library Media Specialist and/or principal.

  7. Technology • There was no technology policy in the policy and procedure. • In our school handbook on page 33 and 34 there is a computer policy. After the parent read all of the 56 pages in the handbook they sign the first page in the handbook and return to school. • Rewrite: I found a technology policy from a neighboring district that I included. The policy includes rules for the computer, list of actions that will result in disciplinary actions, consequences, and a place for the students signature. I also would add a signature line for the parents so they too are aware of the policy.

  8. Challenges • The district challenged materials guidelines come straight from the ALA website. • There is a form A ( Patron’s Request for Reconsideration of Work) which is two pages • The district policy states that no material shall be removed from use until the Materials Evaluation Committee has made its final decision. • Within 30 days the Materials Evaluation Committee will examine challenged material in relation to the district materials selection guidelines and make a decision.

  9. Summary • Over all this district’s policy is well written and very easy to follow and understand. • The expectations for the LMS are clear and defined and would be very helpful for a new LMS to either the district or to the LMS profession.
