  • M.A.B.A.S. formed in 1969 by NW Suburban Fire Departments as an improved method to provide a mutual aid system to agencies in need.

  • The Central Cook-DuPage Mutual Aid Association joined the M.A.B.A.S. system in the early 1980’s.

    • A Box alarm is a fire or other emergency requiring mutual aid. A Box Alarm is the first request for M.A.B.A.S. assistance.

  • NIFERN (Northern Illinois Fire Emergency Radio Network)

    • Mutual aid frequency for fire service agencies. The NIFERN band may be utilized for any incident where 2 or more departments are involved. The incident does not have to be at the box alarm level.

    • The term “Emergency Traffic” will be utilized by a unit encountering an immediately perilous situation and will receive the highest priority from COMMAND, DISPATCH AND ALL OPERATING UNITS!
