  3. Land bridgePeopling the Americas • Land Bridge Theory---emerged linking Asia & North America across the Bering Sea…they walked/migrated • 35,000 years ago • Paleo-Indians settle in Mesoamerica.

  5. The New Global WorldThe Creation of American Society 1450-1763 • Significant changes to North America came about with the mixing of so many peoples and cultures. • Economy • Society • Government • Religion • Culture

  6. Many Peoples • Those who traversed the bridge spread across North, Central, and South America. • Several Tribes and languages. a. Incas-Peru with elaborate networks of roads and bridges linking their empire. b. Mayas-Yucatan Peninsula, with their step pyramids. c. Aztecs-Mexico, step pyramids and huge sacrifices of conquered peoples.

Summary of Mesoamerican PeoplesAncient Mexico and Central America • Civilizations grew up around large religious centers, dominated by temple-pyramids. • People lived primarily as farmers and traders. • Corn (maize) was the main crop, but squash, beans and cotton were raised. • People added to the food supply by hunting and fishing. • There was a strict social order. • Artisans were skilled in arts and crafts,

  8. Later generations improves on Olmec system of writing, number system, calendar, architecture, and sport. • Their God Quetzalcoatl---brought the benefits of civilization and was a gentle god of peace and humility.

  9. The Earliest Americans • The development of MAIZE….was revolutionary in that….. • a. changed the way people lived-from hunter/gatherers to farmers. • b. gave rise to towns and cities • c. corn arrived in modern US around 1,200 BC

  10. Pueblo Indians • The Pueblos were the first American corn growers. • They lived in adobe houses and pueblos (villages)…stacked homes usually beneath cliffs • They had quite elaborate irrigation systems

  11. Mound Builders • These people built huge ceremonial and burial mounds and were located in the Ohio Valley….Chillicothe OH. • Cahokia, near East St Louis, held 40,000 people.

  12. Eastern Indians • Eastern Indians grew corn, beans and squash in “three sister” farming • This group likely had the best (most diverse)of all NA Indians Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw and Iroquois.

Iroquois Confederation • Hiawatha was the legendary leader of this group. • The confederation was a group of 5 tribes in NY state • They were matrilineal as authority and possessions passed down through the female lines. • Each tribe kept their independence, but met to discuss matters of common interest, like war/defense. • This was not the norm usually tribes were scattered and separated ---and weak

  16. Exploration of the Americas • Causes: Traders wanted better routes. Especially to the East. • Explorers search for adventure glory and riches. • Spanish wanted to spread Christianity • Increased in knowledge sparks curiosity about the world.

  17. Effects: European Voyages begin • Trade and mercantilism grows • European countries compete • Conflict with Native Americans develop. • Slavery is introduced in the Americas • Several cultures clash.

  18. Enter the Europeans • The Christian Crusaders of the Middle Ages fought in Palestine to regain the Holy Land from the Muslims. The mixing of Eastern and Western culture created a sweet-tooth where Europeans wanted the spices and other goodies from the Exotic East as Muslims dominated the trade routes on land. • Destination China via Africa.
