Label the column starting on the left “Causes”, “Event”, “Effects” • In groups of 1 or 2 use book/notes to find the cause or effect of the following events: • Mussolini Gains popularity • King Emmanuel II puts Mussolini in charge of the gov’t • Hitler is chosen leader of the Nazi party • Hitler is tried for treason and sentenced to prison • President Hindenburg names Hitler chancellor in 1933 • Hitler has books burned in huge bonfires • Nazis pass laws depriving Jews of their rights • After you have written the cause or effects event, find the person who has the cause or effect of your event

Fascism Rises in Europe • Mussolini Gains popularity C: Italians disappointed by Treaty of Versailles & upset by social unrest, rising inflation, high unemployment; Mussolini promises to save Italy’s economy and rebuild military; starts Fascist party and gains support as economy gets worse E: Mussolini publicly criticized gov’t; Fascist promote campaign of terror & gain support of middle class, industrial leaders, and aristocracy • King Emmanuel II puts Mussolini in charge of the gov’t C: King decides that Mussolini was best hope for his dynasty to survive E: Mussolini abolished democracy & outlaws all political parties except for Fascist party; censorship; jailed opponents, outlaws strikes & makes allies of industrialists and large land owners • Hitler is chosen leader of the Nazi party C: successful organizer E: Nazis became a growing political force

Fascism Rises in Europe • Hitler is tried for treason and sentenced to prison C: Inspired by Mussolini’s march on Rome, Hitler leads Nazis to overthrow gov’t and seize power in Munich E: Writes Mein Kampf: his beliefs and goals for Germany • President Hindenburg names Hitler chancellor in 1933 C: Depression causes Ger econ to collapse; civil unrest breaks out & ppl see Hitler as a strong leader; conservative leaders believe they can control Hitler and tells Hindenburg to name him chancellor E: Hitler acts quickly to strengthen his position; Nazis win majority of parliament; turns Ger into a totalitarian state • Hitler has books burned in huge bonfires C: Hitler wants to control every aspect of German life and shape public opinion E: crushed opposition, forced conformity to Nazi beliefs • Nazis pass laws depriving Jews of their rights C: Anti-Semitism was a key part of Nazi ideology; Nazis used Jews as scapegoats for Ger’s problems E: Violence against Jews increased; Kristallnacht signaled the real start of the process of eliminating Jews from German life
