  2. Using a Ruler • It is very easy to use a ruler. • First put the object on the edge or the “0” of ruler. • Then see where the other end of the object is on the ruler. 0 7 inches

  3. Using a Ruler • If the object is bigger than the ruler you will need to.. • put your finger at the end of the ruler • pick up the ruler • then put the edge or “0” of the ruler where your finger is and add the length of the ruler to your measurement. 33 12 9 12

  4. Reading a Ruler • Inch • ¼ • ½ or 2/4 • ¾ • Next full inch

  5. Reading a Ruler (Inches) • The biggest lines on the ruler are the inch marks. • If we are just using inches, then we round to the nearest inch if the object is somewhere in-between. Both would be 7 since they are both closest to the 7

  6. Reading a Ruler (Inches) • To the nearest inch, how long are these objects? 5 inches About 4 inches About 6 inches

  7. Reading a Ruler (1/2) • The second biggest lines, half way between the inch marks, are the half inch marks. • When you measure an object to the half inch mark, you first say the number you just passed and then ½. Just passed the 4 so it is 4 and ½

  8. Reading a Ruler (1/2) • Try measuring these objects to the nearest ½ inch. Remember that if it is not right on it then round to the nearest half inch, which may mean rounding to the closest inch. 4 and ½ inches About 5 inches About 7 and a ½ inches

  9. Reading a Ruler (1/4) • The lines half way between the inch marks and the ½ marks are ¼ marks • When you measure an object to the quarter inch mark, you first say the number you just passed and then ¼ or ¾ . 4 and ¼ 4 and ¾

  10. Reading a Ruler (1/4) • Try measuring these objects to the nearest ¼ inch. Remember that if it is not right on it then round to the nearest quarter inch, which may mean rounding to the closest inch, quarter or half. 5 and ¼ inches 6 and ¾ inches 7 and ½ inches
