  5. Autonomous learning successful if - goals clearly defined - interests in culture - opportunity to use the language in practice - pleasure not unpleasant duty - internal willing to learn

How important is the student’s motivation? • Reasons for learning a language (interests, professional reasons, emotional) • Integrative motivation (integration into the culture) • Instrumental motivation (means to an end, e.g. getting a better job) • Motivation and effects • Attitude towards learning • Involvement in the language learning

  7. Who is responsible for learning? • Teachers’ role: a guide, supervisor, assistant, advisor, inspiration, encouragement • Students’ role: responsibility for own learning, not waiting to be taught

  8. Advantages and disadvantages of autonomous language learning Advantages: - Time flexibility - Individual pace - Lack of competitiveness - Lack of shame, exposure to critics

  9. Advantages and disadvantages of autonomous language learning Disadvantages: - If lack of communicative interaction - If lack of evaluation, feedback - Lack of competitiveness - If lack of strong motivation, determination and self-discipline

Pronunciation • do not worry if you speak worse than natives • imagine you are speaking to a foreigner in your language (although there are grammatical and pronunciation mistakes you comprehend) • listen a lot • strange sounds impossible to distinguish, e.g • th: ð or Ө • they /ðei/ you may say /dei/ • south /sau Ө/ you may say /sauf/

  19. Grammar • should be explained in a native language on elementary level • may be explained in foreign language if intermediate level • not the most important in communication (improper belief from old school education)
