  1. EXAMPLE ONLY: INSTRUCTOR WILL GIVE YOU THE ASSIGNMENT FOR YOUR SECTIONResearch Methods and Top ## of things you should know as a teacher, fromName of book [by] Author’s name (place, publisher, date published) By—Names of all group members EDU 1700 Spring 2010 Book Club #2

  2. For each Club Member • Why did you choose the book? • How did you expect it to relate to your experiences and interests?   • Were your expectations satisfied? Why or why not? • To whom (if anyone) would you recommend reading this book? That is, what is it good for?

  3. Research Methodology • What was the author’s authority for doing the research? Degrees? Experience? Cite page numbers for where you find this—you MIGHT have to deduce it if the author doesn’t come right out and say it: why does the author seem authoritative TO YOU? • What was their THESIS or ARGUMENT. That is, complete this sentence: “This book is intended to show/prove/suggest that…” You should be able to quote a statement by the author. Cite page number. • Where was the research conducted and with whom? Be as detailed as possible, and cite page number for where you get the information. • What were the methods used to collect data? (Interviews, observations, notes??) Cite either where this was discussed in the book, or cite an example showing the author’s data and give a page number.

  4. Two slides per point; at least one point per person—each person should present their own point in the Book Club Presentation • The point: Summarize what you think is an important point in own words. • The quote: Give a quote (or quotes) from the book—your favorite related to “the point.” Include page number for the quote • The application: How this leads you to see your service learning experiences through a different lens—that is, how it directs your attention to something you might have thought unimportant, or might not have noticed at all. Be specific—not about students in general, but from your reflections, a QUOTE about specific student(s). • The significance: Why this matters to you as a future teacher. If you want to get more creative than this, go for it! Add on what you want, and reformat—but please include a point, a quote from the book, and a quote from your SL data from each of you in the group!
