The “Municipal Council for young people” in Asker • Norwegian government focuses on participation in democracy from an early age, but no laws are passed on this. • As a follow up on governmental focus, Asker decided to established a “Municipal Council for young people” some 12 years ago • Gives the members training in democracy and knowledge of how Asker is governed • Consists of 2 pupils from every school in Asker • First 10 years, participants from 6th and 9th grade, and only one meeting a year • Last 2 years, participants from 6th and 9th grade and high school, and 2 meetings a year. • Meetings are chaired by Mayor Lene Conradi

  4. The meetings… • Autumn meeting focuses entirely on a chosen topic for that year • Spring meeting focuses on both the chosen topic and on how to best spend the money given to the Municipal Council(NOK 300.000) • Topic 2010: Bullying • Topic 2011: Environment

Topic 2011 - Environment In 2011 environment was the topic to discuss • The Municipal Council decided on what they regard as the most important actions in order to ensure a sustainable development of Asker. • These decisions are to be passed on to the committee and then to the “adult” Municipal Council of Asker. • The adult members will decide on how to take action on these decisions. • The Municipal Council also decided on a manifest for the environment.

MANIFEST FOR MILJØET 2011- 2014 Tenk miljø, tenk fremtid • Energi/transport For å spare energi og redusere utslipp så: • Går vi til skolen • Skrur vi av lyset • Dusjer vi raskt • Reiser vi med buss og tog • Kjører vi sammen til trening og bursdag • Kler vi på oss og skrur ned innetemperaturen • Forbruk/Avfall • For å redusere avfall og bruke verdiene i avfallet så: • Komposterer vi matavfall • Kildesorterer vi søpla vår • Vi bruker søpledunken, ikke naturen • Vi tenker før vi kjøper nye ting (tenk før du handler) • Passer vi på det vi eier, sjekker glemmekassa • Tenker vi på om andre kan ha bruk for det vi ikke trenger lenger • Arv og kjøp brukt • Byttedager • Holdninger/Kunnskap • For å påvirke til mer miljøriktig oppførsel så: • Kan vi lage facebookgruppe på miljø • Kan skolen ha en miljøside på It's learning • Kan miljø være tema på allmøter • Kan vil alle være miljøagenter • Markere vi verdens miljødag 5. juni på skolen vår • Har vi grønt flagg på alle skoler

And the money goes to… (2011) The Municipal Council for young people chose to distribute NOK 300.000,- in this way: • Sound system - to be used in all schools - 65 000 kr • Equipment for the Red Cross centre – 50 000 kr • 2 trampolines suitable for use in water – 75 000 • Charity - Casa Olea – 30 000 kr • Vollen youth club - 69 000 kr • Charity - World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – 11 000 kr
