  4. Boston Massacre • 1770 peaceful protest • Nervous British soldiers fired on unarmed colonists • 5 dead

  5. Sam Adams • Formed the Sons of Liberty

  6. Boston Tea Party • 1773 Sons of Liberty dumped 18,000 lbs of tea into harbor to protest tax

  7. Paul Revere • Silversmith • 1775 Rode into the countryside by horse, “The British are coming!” • The Old North Church • “One if by land, two if by sea.”

  8. Bunker Hill • Battle that was actually fought on Breeds Hill • Today in Boston there isn’t even a hill anymore

  9. John Locke • Died 1704 • Developed idea of natural rights to life, liberty, and property • Jefferson borrowed his ideas for the Dec. of Ind.

  10. Thomas Jefferson • Main author of the Dec. of Ind. • 3rd President of the United States

  11. Thomas Paine • Wrote a pamphlet called Common Sense (attempt to convince colonists to become patriots) Highly successful
