  6. Colas bitumen storage For Colas process purposes, bitumen is presently stored at 160°C in gas fired storage tanks with an 80m3 free volume. A part of the energy needs can be provided by an industrial solar heater, functioning in the range 150-200°C. How it works • A heat transfer fluid (Shell Thermia B) is circulated through the solar field to transport the collected energy to the bitumen storage so as to maintain its temperature above 150°C. • At morning, the HTF is circulated inside the solar field until its temperature exceeds that of the bitumen storage. The solar field is then connected to the main heating circuit to transfer the heat from the collectors to the bitumen. • At sunset, or if available solar irradiance is not sufficient to heat the HTF over the storage temperature, the solar field is isolated from the storage circuit . • Whenever the bitumen temperature drops below 150°, the needed energy is supplied by the gas heater. • Temperatures and flow rate are measured, recorded and sent to SRB Energy by GPRS or LAN to monitor the daily performance of the system. Performance reports can then be periodically issued. • According to contractual agreements, system maintenance can be assured by SRB Energy. THE BITUMEN SOLAR HEATER SRBEnergy

  9. Conclusions Solar thermal energy is among the most promising approaches for reducing CO2 emissions and mitigating the negative environmental effects of the industrial activities. SRB Energy proposes to reduce the amount of gas consumed by Colas Genève to maintain the bitumen storage temperature by installing 80 m2 of SRB collectors equipped with cylindrical mirrors. Dimensioned on the base of the available surface, the solar field is able to supply in 1 year up to 63% of the energy needs of 2 bitumen storage tanks, saving about 3500 m3 of natural gas.
